View Full Version : 4,800 RPM redline on a 1972 402 BB?

Does this sound super low?! My Haynes manual says that for my engine 4,800 is the redline. Is this conservative cosidering my last horsepower thread, or is this serious. I am not looking for F1 RPMs here but was expecting something more in the 5,500 range.

Any experience with this? It is a 2-bolt main but 4,800 still sounds lame.

You're talking about the beginning of the no-fun emissons era with low compression, lazy cam profiles and lazy ignition timing. Chances are you wouldn't want to try and wind it out much further than that anyway. Even small blocks in that era stared showing up with tachs that yellow-lined at 4500 and redlined at 5000.

Not like the bottom end of the motor is going to fly apart at 4900 (I intend to take my 2-bolt cast crank 454 out to about 6500 with nothing but better rod bolts), and all the other "shortcomings" of the stock motor are fixable for more RPMs.

In short, yes, I tend to believe it for a dead-stock motor.

I agree with Damon. Sounds about right.

I read in some manual (Haynes?) that the max rpm on my old motor (stock 267) was 4500 - I never shifted it above 4200, that is, until the day I was to take that POS engine out.
