You could start it, maybe take it for a drive, change the oil,, ect.
The possibilities are endless.

Now, would you like to try the question again?

go easy on the new guy. people are too seroius on this forum sometimes.

as for 80-408ci, i take it you have already done something to it as chevy didn't make a 408. is it a big or small block. and what are your intentions for the car. and waht have you already done to the car/drivetrain.

if you could just help us help you and give as much information as possible that would really help.

From the profile, it's a bigblock. You'll find there is a wealth of expertise wandering around the board here that can turn your motor into a street friendly torque monster, or a fire breathing dragon. You just have to give them an idea of the goals, use and budget.

I guess I should have posted a smiley after my comment to show I was kidding but I figured with such a blind question like that, it wasn't needed.

My advice is this. Take the $1000 and invest in a nice tight shifting T350 or T400 with a megashifter and a posi with about a 3:73 or 3:90 gear and keep it on the street. Years ago I bought my first camaro 1976. I thought it would be fun to make it into a drag car. It gets hard to know when to quit. To make a long story short after 15 years it was a garage queen. Due to the fact that I had to put racing gas in it and it had lost its daily driver status. I sold it. Drag racing is expensive. Although its alot of fun, you will have more fun accelerating from stop lights on the street because its free.

What's the setup on the engine at the moment? What carb, Intake? Headers? Exhaust system? Ignition system? What convertor is behind it? Gears?

Change those gears. A 3:55 to a 3:73 will make a big difference.

I'd suggest either asking your dad or maybe find a local muscle car guy who can give your car a looking over & fill in some of the blanks.
Without knowing what is there, it's pretty hard to recommend any changes.

Dumping the 3.08 gears is a good place to start though, 3.73 will be good for a compromise gear, not a all-out drag gear but it won't kill you to take it on the highway for short runs. Is it a posi rearend?
If not, an Eaton Posi, some better axles & gears & you've killed that $1000 in a good way.

Other than the gears, it sounds like a pretty good combination. The air shocks should go, they make the car handle like crap usually.
