I seem to remember some folks griping about some particular model of these.. holley blue or something like that?
Just wondering what people reccomend as a regulator / fuel pump for a 300-400hp sbc with an edelbrock carb.
Also, does a regulator require a return line to the gas tank?
Thanks for any info :)

Eddy carbs are well known for not liking anything above 5.5psi, so I would recommend a regulator. With your setup, a standard Holley dead head regulator (they're about $22US) should do the job. You don't need a bypass regulator at that level, hence no return line. IMHO

You can feed that deal with a mechanical Edelbrock pump with no regulator required. 110 GPH will be more than enough. i had one on a 450 HP BBC that ran 12.00 @ 112 MPH

I run a holley blue pump and regulator I have mine set to 6psi and it holds rock steady there I have never had a problem with it.

I agree you could get away with a good mechanical. I have had good luck with the Holley electric pumps but the regulator that comes with the blue pump is junk. I have not had good luck with them. I usually switch to a better regulator.

You will need a regulator with the edelbrock carb no matter what fuel pump you run. The eddy carbs floods out, spits fue, etc at over 5.5 psi. I run mine at 5.25 psi.
The std. $20-25 holley deadhead regulator will do you just fine.
Your '79 should have a return line on the car from the factory IIRC. If that's the case I would go to a parts store and ask for a a fuel pump for a 1970/71 camaro Z28 with the LT1 350 in it.
That is a high vol (90-110 GPH I think) mech. fuel pump with a return port on it. Be about $13-$16
I ran that same pump and reg. on my car for quite awhile. Worked fine untill I got the car into the high 11's then I started out running the fuel on the top end of the track. So I switched to the carter 172 GPH mech. pump.
Here's some picks of my holley reg, and 71 camaro z28 parts store replacement pump.

Thanks for all the replies guys - good info!
Right now it's a 305 with the 600 eddy. Stock fuel pump, no regulator. There's only one fuel line to and fro the pump, I can tell you that much for sure. Probably for the best, considering what's there is about 50% metal and 50% rubber hose!
Strange enough I don't really have any problems with the carb at all.. though I have no idea what my fuel pressure is.

I know a few who have had problems with the E-brock mechanical pumps including myself. They are a pain because of the adapter plates you have to add to the bottom. If you don't stand on your head on the third Thursday when Jupiter and Mars align, you'll never get em to seal. I run the E-brock performer package (less heads) and the stock mechanical pump works great!
