View Full Version : Blue engines
owen1980 04-17-2005, 10:05:00 PM Who has kept there late 70's early 80's motors original GM blue when they have rebuilt them. I could not convince the guys I work with that blue was the original color. I was painting my water pump and they asked why am I painting it F**d blue. I about threw it at them.

3origZlovers 04-17-2005, 10:14:00 PM I have 77Z 350
Have new engine for 78Z, its blue also.
jeff81 04-17-2005, 11:43:00 PM I painted the new motor I rebuilt for my '81 blue. You might be able to tell in my pics.
MulletMan1980 04-18-2005, 02:08:00 AM I did in my 79 so I can just tell the avg joe its a smogger 305 with a shiny carb, intake and some headers. The chevy blue is lighter and ford is more a traditional blue I believe.
manicmechanic 04-18-2005, 10:11:00 AM I painted my 80Z motor back to factory color, I even took a sample into the paint store for them to match it to. I used Deltron, it came out a little more onthe green side of blue, but it did match the sample I gave them. The sample came off the flexplate because it was never exposed to the elements to change it's color.

Damon 04-18-2005, 04:13:00 PM I was never wild about the blue.
When I build a motor you can, of course, have it in any color you like..... as long as it's black.
pdq67 04-18-2005, 07:56:00 PM Don't mean to offend, but the pic looks like a Pontiac color??

Air_Adam 04-18-2005, 08:11:00 PM I got a engine from a '79 Z28 and dropped it into a '83 Z28, which had a black engine originally... I repainted the 350 blue. I like it.

I have never repainted an engine with the Chevy blue. I have painted a few Chevy engines Ford blue. Sorry, but I like the Ford color better and the engines didn`t seem to care one bit.

you can sort of see the blue on my old valve covers under the rust.

owen1980 04-18-2005, 10:35:00 PM Manicmechanic I would have to say that the color looks a little off to me as well. My blue is a GM paint # for 77-81. I will get some pics of my pieces so far.
daves 76 rs 04-19-2005, 07:07:00 PM everybody on here will hate me but i painted my motor ford red, cause everybody has orange and it was the closest thing i could find to a true red instead of orange.
bryan1970 04-19-2005, 08:10:00 PM hey ford red isn't all that bad it would be like a rat/mouse in a sheep's paint color

Greg Mc 04-19-2005, 10:15:00 PM When I rebuilt mine, i just couldn't go back with the blue color. Mine is black.
pdq67 04-19-2005, 10:31:00 PM I'm hard-core Chevy Orange!!

1981coupe400ci 04-20-2005, 12:52:00 AM i'm an orange guy http://2.6liter.com/./userfiles/camaro81/350chevy1.JPG
bryan1970 04-20-2005, 01:23:00 AM black is good too. i had a big block that was black it did a great job of hiding leaks and dirt! however when i pulled it out to put it in my camaro i just couldn't resist giving it a good coat ot chevy orange.
Joekool 04-21-2005, 01:30:00 AM Some numbskull painted the engine in my Trans Am chevy orange, talk about commiting the ultimate sin.
bmxmann 04-21-2005, 01:32:00 AM i like orange, grey, blue, whatever. my step-dads 327 is painted orange, and it looks really nice. my bro's 302 (ford) is painted a bluish grey, and that looks nice, mine is painted orange with dirt and oil and other crap all over it, maybe some day i will pull it out and clean it and i want to paint it the same color as the car........blue.
Joekool 04-21-2005, 01:33:00 AM I like black myself http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/11/web/311000-311999/311206_9_full.jpg
Ryan 79 04-23-2005, 12:26:00 AM You guys need to compromise.
My block is a 98 Ford body color blue, the heads, oil pan, and timing cover are black. The valve covers are finned aluminum, and they're blue but the fins are aluminum. The intake was left the stock aluminum color, the air cleaner is painted the same color as the block, as was the alternator, P/S pump, water pump, and fan.
Engine colors are unlimited, but everyone who's seen my motor thinks it looks awesome.
Paint it with a brush and kind of daub it on, and you'll be amazed at how easy it was to paint and how indestructible the paint is.
MoparGuy 04-23-2005, 10:17:00 AM I used to paint all of my engines chevy orange (yes, even my dodge 440,383,340's etc.) I thought it was the only color that looked HP. Now I like the original colors better for some reason. (here is a picture before I cleaned the engine compartment if this works)

I notice that Chevy blue does look like a Pontiac color in pictures.
danbrennan 04-24-2005, 07:29:00 PM I kept my '78's engine blue when I rebuilt it. I rather like it, especially with my yellow-orange body paint. My '74's engine was red, and so was the 350 in my '75 Corvette; so somewhere between '75 and '78, I guess they changed colors.
MacDaddy 04-24-2005, 08:03:00 PM I painted mine a blue color kinda between Ford blue and GM blue. I like it. I do have to clean it every six months or so. I just get some engine cleaner and spray it in there (avoiding all electrical stuff, of course) and rinse with water. It works great.
