Hello all. I have been lurking for some time (Gawd that sounds perverted) Did a job change, for the better, remodeled two rooms in the house, had to reregister here again (New email addy) and now ready to perform surgery on the 1978 Z28 Camaro. I have several questions.

Question 1. The car is exempt from emissions. We will be yanking the charcoal canister, is there anything I need to be aware of?

Question 2. a 3 part question Exhaust – We will be installing a set of headers. I plan on having the pipes and mufflers installed professionally. Since it is emissions exempt do I need to have a set of Cats on it? Flowmasters seem to be the muffler of choice, is this the best sounding muffler? Looking for bad ass sound. Next tail pipe location, I have 5 choices, A. in front of the rear tires, B. just behind the rear tires, C. at the back of the rear quarter panel, angled outward, D. behind the rear axels pointed down towards the pavement, or E. straight out the back.

Question 3. Hurst used to put out a racing type shifter that had no pattern to it. It was a straight throw forward, shift back type of pattern, is this shifter or equal still available? And if so how does this work with the “Reverse, steering wheel lock system” ?

Thanks in advance for all your answers and opinions. This place is a great resource of information.

"The car is exempt from emissions"
Hehehe that just sounds good dont it http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Anyways hope this helps a bit.

Question 1, ...Not that I can think of so long as the tank has a working vent somewhere and then you can just plug off/take off what you want.

Question 2,....A)No cats needed but i do suggest a jet hot or ceramic coated set of headers so they dont look nasty in a week or less..
B)mufflers IMO always sound deeper in a 3 inch so skip over the 2-1/2 stuff and get that nice 3 inch rumble be it a flowmaster super 40, etc etc http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif.
C)behind the rear axels pointed down towards the pavement, or E. straight out the back is the best IMO but if you live on a dusty road you may only want to do strait out the back to keep the dust down.

3)I think you are talking about a ratchet or "slap" shifter and yes they still make those as does B&M. Reverse has a lockout that you will need to lift or pull to get into on the shifter depending on the model, and the steering lockout is in the steering column so it will be un effected by a shifter change.

Thanks for the reply. The thought of 3" pipes out the back end just says "look out"

Here is a link to the pics of the car undergoing major surgery.

That the charcoal cannister doesn't adversely affect performance in any way?

All it does is trap gasoline vapors from the gastank and purge them into the engine when you start up.
Without it, you need a vented gascap, which means that the car is producing gasoline fumes 24/7, which is bad for us all.

Really, PCV and the charcoal cannister are two emissions systems that eliminate most of the pollution that cars produce, and since they don't hurt power, why get rid of them?

I agree with everything except the 3" exhaust. Unless you've got a hell of a motor, you'd be better with the 2 1/2". You'll actually hurt your performance with the 3". You might put some extensions on the rear that make it look like 3".

Fixin' a 77Z,78Z and a 80Z. I must be crazy!

Thanks for the replies. I am going with the smaller exhaust and probably out the rear (Now that sounds disgusting) or behind the rear wheels. I just finshed painting the engine cmpartment and will post some pics. Took longer to clean and mask everything off than paint it. Used 4 coaats of VHT high gloss paint.

my brother just got exhuast put on his 65 mustang w/302, he had them put them out the side before the rear tire with some short glass packs, it sounds really sweet, loud, but sweet. kinda makes me wish i would have done it. as long as you dont rev it on a gravel road, you should be fine (i live on a gravel road http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/frown.gif )

are you talking about a 4 spd manual shifter,if you are that shifter is called the hurst "verti-gate". the shifter has a straight up & back shift pattern when you shift from 1rst to 2nd it moves on a ramped gate.it also has a seperate handle for reverse
