View Full Version : Sender Question or Should I Say Confusion...

My dash temp gauge (not dummy light) does not work on my 71SS and I read in numerous posts in the archives about adding a mechanical temp gauge in the engine either on the temp sender on the driver's side head or on the TCS(??) sender on the passengers side head seen here:

So today I decide to remove the above sender and as I'm removing it a gush of antifreeze pours out! I right away put the sender back in, not wanting to flood my garage. Is this supposed to happen and will this also happen if I remove the temp sender on the drivers's side?
Also, do the threads on most aftermarket (Autometer) manual temp gauges fit the 350?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The sender reads coolant temperature so it stands to reason that it would be screwed into the engine's water jacket, don't you think? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Yeah, you should drain the cooling system or you'll get the "gush." Even with draining it you'll still get a few cups pouring out most times.

I think he summed it all up for ya. Go ahead and get you a gallon or two of coolant. You're gonna lose about that much to get the level below that of the cylinder head sending unit hole.

Thanks for the prompt replies fellas. Nowhere in the archives did it say "watch out for the antifreeze flood". :-) I guess this shows how "green" I am at some things. Get it??

Thanks again!

LMAO!! One of those live and learn moments (That we've all had http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif). Just pay attention to how close the header will be to the capilary tube of the temp sending unit when you decide which side of the block to use. But just in case, pick the one furthest from the header tube http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif. Ask me how I found out (read above)
