I have a

2 bolt 450 hp 383 with
70 cc iron heads ported polished to the max
2.10 intake 1.94 exhaust
9.8:1 compression
forged bottom end
comp 282 .489 int/exh
rpm air gap
770 holley
hooker headers
harland sharp 1.5s

and I think I might want to upgrade the ignition. I currently have an Accel cap, rotor, and hi performance coil and wires. I was thinking about getting a multi-spark ignition box, because I have assumed that they help out alot. Has anyone noticed a large or very noticeable difference when using a MSD 6A or 6AL box, or maybe a Mallory HyFire, or Jacobs Electronics Ignition Controller? I eventually want to upgrade the dist to a pro billet MSD or Mallory, but don't know which to go with. I was just going to get the multi spark box now, and then get the dist and stuff later when I get the money. Can anyone help me out here, and recommend me to what I should use, and why? If you can, let me know. Thanks

Jake

oh, and if I got MSD 6 box, I never really spin the motor to high, so would there be any reason to get the 6al box over the 6a? I dont think I need a rev limiter, but should i go ahead and get it, just to be safe?

a msd box will help you alot from idle to 3000 rpm ,this is were the box fires 3 sparks per compression stroke in ea cylinder . so if you have a plug fouling issue using a msd box will eliminate that problem . also motors that seem to stumble from idle to about 3000rpm the msd box will help you .

i would get the msd 6al as it's good insurance in case of a driveshaft issue or missed shift and that you won't over rev the motor

Either one would be fine. I am running a 6AL with a billet HEI. I have no complaints. I plan on upgrading to an MSD distributor down the road. I noticed a big difference going for a stock HEI to a 6AL set-up.

ok cool guys, thanks alot for the help. I'm gonna go with the 6AL, but I have one more question. I'm going to go ahead and get it now, can I run it with my Accel HEI, and just use a different harness? How does that work? Thanks

the 6AL comes with the harness adapter to plug directly into your pickup coil and eliminate your stock hei module. the 6AL box becomes your module so to speak. the stock pickup coil triggers the 6AL and then the 6AL distributes the power through another pair of wires from the 6AL to the coil. make sure your 2 wires going to the pickup coil,, and the 2 wires going to the coil itself,, are twisted and isolated from each other,, and other voltage carrying wires,, to reduce the chance of inducing current into each other. i wired mine using an accell super coil in cap and it sparks just fine so far.
hope it helps.

If you decide to replace your distributor with a Mallory Unilite, I have to warn you that you'll have to remove it from the engine and disassemble it to change the advance curve. I replaced mine with a MSD Pro Billet for that reason. The Mallory was a good dist., but it was a pain to tune. Maybe they changed the design since I got mine in 1990.
