Hey guys, I'm gonna buy a car from a guy that hasn't been started in about a year. The motor was rebuilt and about 6000 miles put on it and then put in storage. I'm thinking I could should squirt some 4D-40 in all the cylinders or try to squirt some oil in there and then crank the engine manually to get the cylinders wet before I try and start it. Any other suggestions?

Bring some good gas and a battery and go to town.

Pull the plugs out if it looks like its really been sitting there that long.

Change the oil first. If any water seperated from the oil it is on the bottom, closest to the sump pick-up.

Myself I would go through more trouble to insure no wear on start up.

Change oil and filter.
Drain fuel out and put in new.
Change the spark plugs.
While you got the old plugs out squirt alittle MMO into each cyl.

Mark the dist., then pull it out. Use an oil pump primer tool and a drill to spin the oil pump and get oil flowing through engine.

Put dist. back in
Fuel some fuel into carb bowls.

Put a good battery in

Fire her up.

Sounds good to me. It's been sitting a year not a century. :p

Actually if truth be known I'd just throw jumpers on it and hit the key.

71 camaro.. Every one has thier own way and thier opinions. I strongly dis agree with you, and hhott71 though.

That would be like saying.. Rebuild a new engine and don't prime it or nothing and just fire it up.

Oil even like Amsoil, mobil one, RP, redline, etc will drain off all the engine metal with in a year... So you pretty much have zero oil on rod and main bearings, in the oil pump, on the cam, in the lifters, etc etc.

fuel in lines and carb is probbly mostly evap'ed out.

So you gonna be spinning and spinning a dry engine untill fuel is up, and oil is up (it will take a few seconds 10-80 seconds depending on pump for oil to get up and through the engine in something that aint been fired in a year)

That's alot of extra un needed wear on the main, rod, cam bearings, cam lobes, lifters, crank journals, etc.

Plus not to mention the oil thats a year old is thicker now, won't flow or lube as good. Probbly dirty and will carry any water or dirt that settled in it through out the engine.

It's a fricken Chevy! Did you ever TRY to kill one? It ain't ez. :bowtie:

I do agree that all the suggestions are things to consider doing. What I'm saying is chances of doing any real damage by doing that stuff later is remote. I've started cars that have sat for years many a time and haven't ever had problem.

A little oil in the holes IS a good safety precaution however. The other stuff is just for good measure imo.
