Which bolt holes do they go in? I bought one of the ones from summit, but it didn't come with directions. I'm sure I'd figure it out, but wanna make sure from you guys first.

They should only fit in one location. If too low it'll hit the damper and if to high, well you know.

There just happens to be an excellent picture of the aftermarket timing pointer for an 8" balancer in the pics in this thiread (center pic)

http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78870

Be aware, you have 8" balancers, 6-1/4" balancers,,, balancers for (pre 90's I believe) with the zero mark straight up (timing pointer is a tube behind the waterpump) and our normal balancers with the zeo mark in the 2 o'clock position. Make SURE you know what you have before mixing parts up.

kik - That's what I thought, I just wanted to hear you guys say it.

Marv - I have an 8" factory balancer. The link you provided doesn't really show what pointer I have. Isn't that a timing tab?? This is what I have : http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2D163600&autoview=sku

Thanks guys!

Here's a pic of a Tavia pointer w/ a 6.75" ATI dampner on the old 383 on the left. Should mount the same as the slummit pointer

Sweet! - thats what I was looking for!!!! Another question, this one is VERYYYYY stupid, however, I don't know and therefore, I need to ask. When I put the tape on, it goes from the slash in the dampner clockwise, right? :shy:

Yes, the crankshaft turns clockwise, you want to measure things that happen BEFORE TDC reaches the pointer, so your degree marks will go clockwise from ZERO/TDC.

BTW, clean the balancer with acetone, carb clkeaner, anything and everything you can think of before you stick the timing tape on. And even then I'm going to wish you luck with it staying on more than a couple of days

If you're putting a timing pointer - the adjustable type, make sure the balancer is at TDC when you take the old tab off. Then you can adjust the new pointer to 0*.

I used clear box tape on one and it worked pretty good. You gotta get it tight. I trimmed it up real nice and then heated with a heat gun, worked all the wrinkles out with one of those body filer tools, not sure what it's called. This one stayed on about a couple of months! Ha!!

Cool, thanks guys. I know it was a newb question, but wanted to make sure. I know it's not gonna stay on long, and I plan on using some kind of paint or something to mark the dampner so when the tape falls off, I'll still be able to check my timing. What do you guys recommend using to paint my slashes?? I'm thinking of using something like white out, but don't know how long that'll even stay on. I plan on using larger slashes for every 5 degrees, and then smaller ones for individual degrees.

Paint the dampner red, blue, white, whatever... then scribe the lines through the paint with a concrete scribe or awl, and then clearcoat. Just make SURE you have the right tape for the diameter balancer you have.

10° on YOUR balancer:

diameter in inches times pi (3.14159)
divided by 36 = distance in inches around the circumference of the balancer for 10°.

I put the tape on my big block's balancer and then sprayed it with a couple coats of clear coat, it held up through it being dynoed but I havent got the car running yet so I dont know how long it will last on the streets. But it seems to be sealed in there very well.

Why not just use a proform degreed damper cover. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PRO%2D141%2D726&autoview=sku
They come in red, blue, chrome, or black.. Has timing marks and numbers printed on it, bolts to / over your damper useing the pulley and damper bolts.

Take your lower pulley off, put this cover over damper, put pulley back on.

I had one on mine for the last 3 years and love it.

That looks pretty sweet! I think I'll just order this and be done with it. Thanks alot!

*edit: I'm debating on either the chrome, or the black. Which one do you guys think would be easiest to read? I care much more about functionality than looks. ;end edit*

The black one would be my choice.
But thats just me

I have the chrome one on mine with black markings.. Not hard to see at all. The water pump, alt., and PS pump pretty much blocks any sunlight from hitting it so you don't really have to worry about the chrome giving off a sun glare.

If they are both equally read-able, I'm going to get the black one.
