View Full Version : HELP, head ID
73Zguy 04-13-2005, 08:08:00 PM I came across a 78 type LT, and the motor doesn't fit the year of the car (center bolt valve covers).
Anyone know what where to find the info on heads # 14102183? I can't find them on this site, or in my exchange manual.
Wasn't it 1986 0r 87 before the center bolt valve covers came out?
The motor number looks like it's a GM crate, because nothing matches the VIN.
The car should have a 305 2bbl.
Any info would help.
Thanks!!

1978LT 04-14-2005, 09:12:00 AM Are you sure it isn't 193 heads? I have a set of those, they are centerbolt and have the swirl design. There is no 183, just 083 or 193. The 083 is a good head that can be ported to flow real well. The 193 swirl port can be made to flow in the mid to high 220s on the intake side, which is way better than anyone ever imagined http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif I have a set I'm going to do , to I will let you know how hard it is http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
malducci 04-15-2005, 12:42:00 PM 1978LT, You seem to have some not so public knowledge on newer heads, porting them, and which ones flow decent after a port job. All the books I've seen on porting heads are based on the olders heads and none of the newer stock heads. What reference or books do you have on newer heads (193, 083, 416, 601, etc)?
1978LT 04-15-2005, 02:39:00 PM 416 and 601 are 1.84 305 heads with *small* chambers, like upper 50's. I believe they flow around 185 ish + or - on the intake side, which isn't bad for a small valve, small port 305 head. The 083 from what I understand is the fore runner of Vortecs. They are 64cc chamber, centerbolt valve covers, and were used on IROC and Z/28 EFI Camaros. The 193 is a late '80s-early '90s TBI head. It was GM's first attempt at swirl, before they started making the Vortecs and found out they could get swirl by biasing the ports (slanting them). The 193 has a good sized port to make up for the swirl ramp (some say 170cc, chevyhiperformance says 185!).
As far as books, most of the stuff I have are magazines that deal with late model performance. You can also learn a ton over at www.thirdgen.org (http://www.thirdgen.org) There are a few guys over there who have got the swirl port heads to flow in the mid 220's and they aren't done! Late model heads have some potential if you know what to do (maybe one day I'll know what to do http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif). I remember one magazine article in particular in which they ported and installed larger valves in either 416 or 601 305 heads and put them on a 305 with a Comp Magnum 292 cam (I think that's the cam), ran 10.0 or so compression, and hit in the neighborhood of 400 hp!
pdq67 04-15-2005, 09:30:00 PM I have that old mag. somewhere in my several boxes!
From a 1995 Chevy High Performance article.

I have that one also, but I do remember either Car Craft or one of the mags doing up a set of 416 heads with the whole works cause they couldn't get AFR or anyone to make a one off good flowing set of 1.94 heads. Sounds like the same buildup though, max hp was in the upper 6000 range I think. I'll have to look on my shelf and see.
