View Full Version : wieand and vortecs?
79marz28 04-11-2005, 12:22:00 PM Hey guys, been doing some research about the setup I plan on buying in the next couple weeks. I'm set on the vortecs modified to be able to handle .525 lift from scogey dickens. From what I read it sounds like a XE268 is the way to go for a cam. Was gonaa go with the performer intake, but saw someone running a weiand stealth. Didn't know they were vortec compatible? Any better than the performer? I have 3.42 gears and dual exhaust and headers. Do you guys think I would be able to beat a 05 mustank GT light to light scenario with this kind of setup? If not were do I need to tweak this?
slmmr75 04-11-2005, 05:54:00 PM Whats your converter rated at? With the XE268, you will probably want to go with something between 2400-3000.
If you are looking to run light to light, then you need to make sure you have a good set of tires. Nittos are probably the best for a car that will see the track rarely. The BFGs hook better, but do not last as long and driving in the rain can get scary. You also have the MTs now, which hook like you wouldn't believe, but aren't going to last you at all.
I'm not sure what kind of numbers the new mustangs are running, but with the set up you are looking at, you will probably be running mid-low 13s if you have traction and depending on your tune.
1978LT 04-11-2005, 06:23:00 PM If you run Vortecs, use a cam with about 8-10 degrees more exhaust duration. It will make up for the poor flowing port.
I would think you could at least keep up with the new Mustang, if not beat it by a bit. Like slmmr said, a good Vortec setup is good for low 13s or high 12s. If you run a .480 lift cam, use 1.6 rockers. Vortecs flow to .500 so you should take advantage of that http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif.
slmmr75 04-11-2005, 07:00:00 PM If I would have waited a little longer, I would have gone with something more radical than the xe268. I think that I may have to go to some 1.6 rockers.
Hopefully I get my car wired up and driveable sometimes soon. Once it's road worthy again, I'll have to let you know 1978LT, so that you can join us at the track or we can get togheter, next time I have to go out to NN for work.

Hey slmmr, I'm still interested in that GMPP Vortec crate engine intake. Let me know what you want for it.
slmmr75 04-11-2005, 10:03:00 PM Well if you would like for me to drop it off, it will cost you about $250 for me having to deal with the tunnel and these ever increasing gas prices. Have I sent you any pictures of it yet? I wanted to get about $100 for it, but make an offer. It's not doing me any good sitting in the garage.

I agree with you on the tunnel http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Hell I'd be willing to pay $10 shipping myself just to avoid that freakin' tunnel!! Send me pics please!
Smokin70SS 04-12-2005, 07:31:00 AM If the GT your gonna be running against is anything like the one I saw last Thursday (10's in the 1/8 mile) you should be able to take him no prob.
79marz28 04-12-2005, 09:21:00 AM Thanks for the replies fellas. Hey slmmr, how streetable is your car right now? I called comp cams for thier advice. They suggested the xe274, as i've heard from other people in the forum. The thing is some people say it is to radical for a daily driver, I wouldn't know. They also say that you lose a lot of low end torque with the 274. What do you guys think? I don't mind getting a new converter if I go with something better. Thanks fellas.
79marz28 04-12-2005, 12:45:00 PM p.s.Wow are those numbers for the mustang real! I must say I had alot more respect for these new mustangs. I heard they put out 300+horses stock.
slmmr75 04-12-2005, 06:37:00 PM 1978LT you got mail.
79marz28. My car as it sits now isn't streetable at all, mainly because the lack of interior, wiring and brakes. Before I started taking things apart, I felt that the car was very streetable.
Each persons perspective on what is/isn't radical for a daily driver is going to differ. As long as I didn't have any vacuum issues which would affect my brakes, I would go with something with a huge lobe.
