View Full Version : Any motor guy's with info on Big Block LS7 454 old zeder 02-22-2007, 05:10:04 PM Hi i am looking for any persons or writen info on Gen. IV LS7-454 engines that can give me the specs on the factory parts and rated HP they produce Thanks pdq67 02-22-2007, 06:40:19 PM It was still-born AND never offered in a vehicle for sale by GM b/c it was too much!! About 500+ hp for starters!! Just look at the 454 LS7 as a stroked 427 L-88!!! Same spec's if I remember right except for the stroke.. pdq67 PS., and an L-88 with no more than just an uncorked set of headers on her will make like 540 or so hp!!! So figure the LS7 at 600+hp or so!!! John old zeder 02-22-2007, 09:56:34 PM Thanks for the info, the mech. cam that i have has a duration intake/exhaust of 242 & lifter intake/exhaust of 520 still seem to have enough vaccum to run power brakes & steering. BlownBigBlock 02-23-2007, 12:01:13 AM I essentially built one for my vette. I was able to get a hold of a factory ZL-1 grind camshaft. With a M22 and a 4.11 rear, it was quite fun to drive. Oh, in regards to what "old zeder" said I had roughly 2 inches of vacuum. I had to install a vacuum pump to get the headlights to come up, along with wiper door. The cam is gonna be the most difficult to get since GM isn't producing it anymore, have seen them on Ebay now and then. TRW still makes the pistons, 4 bolt block, good crank, and r-port heads, everything else is still available. Fun setup though.. :) One of the last pics I have of it.. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a343/BlownBigBlock447/Camaro%20Pictures/Vette1.jpg ZS10 02-23-2007, 01:46:11 AM ^ Nice! pdq67 02-23-2007, 08:38:43 AM Sounds like you only have the LS-6 solid cam in yours. Are you positive it is an LS-7?? I ask b/c it should be right at 12 to 1 CR. or maybe a schosh more. The LS-6 is only 11 to 1 CR. pdq67 Marv D 02-23-2007, 08:42:26 AM Blown,, that makes me sick,,,, I had a 68, T top, same blue, Mako Phase III body package, fenderwells, stubby sidepipes, (sush don't tell Bob I ever owned a bigblock, but ) 427, 4spd,,, what makes me sick is I sold it in 1973 for $2250 (and no there are no missing zero's in that number) Every time I see a Vette with the fin on the back I get weak in the knees. I would kill to have the car back at ANY price now!! I'm sure you know what I mean :whine: :whine: :whine: old zeder 02-23-2007, 09:22:32 AM Hi The cam i have was put in to give me enough vaccum on power equipment. Cast heads have small hump in middle, with angle plugs, block has no front deck or numbers stamped, just cast numbers at rear of block, heads have duel valve springs with rod guides, Cast Hi-Prof & numbers, duel roller chain, 4bolt mains, block also has Hi-Prof. cast on side. anything other then the serial # from GM if you want drop me a line lots of pics of the engine inside and out. Thanks old zeder 02-23-2007, 09:24:43 AM Hi and what is a bottle of new car smell going to do for performance???????? BlownBigBlock 02-23-2007, 10:20:32 AM Blown,, that makes me sick,,,, I had a 68, T top, same blue, Mako Phase III body package, fenderwells, stubby sidepipes, (sush don't tell Bob I ever owned a bigblock, but ) 427, 4spd,,, what makes me sick is I sold it in 1973 for $2250 (and no there are no missing zero's in that number) Every time I see a Vette with the fin on the back I get weak in the knees. I would kill to have the car back at ANY price now!! I'm sure you know what I mean :whine: :whine: :whine: Marv, yeah - you sold it during one of the gas crisis's back then from the sounds of it, performance, much less the words "big block" would of been bad back then. I sold mine about 6 years ago for $14K, I still see the car now and then at shows, paint is starting to show it's age, but the only thing the guy has done to it in that time is put on a new fuel pump. I had redone the suspension, trailing arms, brakes/rotors just before I sold it. Last time I talked to the guy he was offered like $20K+ for it. BlownBigBlock 02-23-2007, 10:23:54 AM Thanks for the info, the mech. cam that i have has a duration intake/exhaust of 242 & lifter intake/exhaust of 520 still seem to have enough vaccum to run power brakes & steering. Found an interesting post on the corvette forum, that's where I got the specs below, some of the guys over there are quite knowledgable.. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=418065 If that's the duration you don't have a ZL-1 cam or L-88. Here are the specs for both.. It might be an LS-6 as someone commented above. L88 - p/n 3925535 - .540I/.560E Lift .262I/.269E Duration @ .050 lift ZL-1 / LS-7 - p/n 3959180 - .560I/.600E Lift .262I/.273E Duration @ .050 lift Can someone give me a lumpity-lumpity-lump... :D pdq67 02-23-2007, 08:33:11 PM Per Z-, "block has no front deck or numbers stamped, just cast numbers at rear of block" I hate to say it, but I'd be pulling the heads off of it tomorrow morning!! pdq67 old zeder 02-23-2007, 10:14:29 PM Hi Sorry their is a full front deck just no numbers, numbers on back are as follows, 14015445 E239 GM3PXCFD Comp/R is said to be 12:1 +, heads #'s are 6272990 K038 GM1 Hi-PERF BlownBigBlock 02-24-2007, 12:13:24 AM Hi Sorry their is a full front deck just no numbers, numbers on back are as follows, 14015445 E239 GM3PXCFD Comp/R is said to be 12:1 +, heads #'s are 6272990 K038 GM1 Hi-PERF The heads are open chamber r-port GM service replacement, so you still could have what the guy is telling you it is... The block is a 78-90 2 or 4 bolt block. So whatever it is, it's been piece-mealed together. So the only real way to tell what ya have is to tear it down if you want to go that far with it. But if your happy with the way it works, I'd just run-er the way it is and enjoy it. pdq67 02-24-2007, 11:26:54 AM For my own peace of mind, I would pull a head, cam and and the pan so that I would know just exactly what it is. But it's your's so please do whatever you want. As always, just trying hard to help here.. pdq67 old zeder 02-24-2007, 12:47:27 PM Hi Thanks for the info, i have pics of the inside with the pan off before i installed it, with the pump and tag #'s it has 4 bolt mains all you can see is the underside of the pistons, crank, rods, etc, other pick shows the double chain and #s on front pulley's, heads show view under covers, when i bought the long block was said that this is a new not run engine with the original pistons inside, heads were new factory untouched, new cam mfg. Seal Power Ultra Hi Rev. with Crane roller rockers as i requested for street use only, i looked at the cam inside from top their were no marks on it and he said i should lub the cam lobes & lifters before i install them push rods and rockers/posi nuts and rest of the install of parts i did before bolt in to car. I have been very happy with the performance of this engine, only adjustments i need to make are timming & carb corrections runs rich, in this cold weather it needs a shot of Quick Start down the carb and it's lit, lifter settings are intake 20th & exhaust 24th, plugs i use are NGK V-Power UR6 he recommended not to use a colder plug, it's very cold up here in Canada at this time of year lots of snow and -24 deg temps now so i have been running the engine for an hour each week with car half way out of the garage inside temp is around 40 deg. This engine is tight takes a lot of power to crank. So unless the engine brakes, i don't plan on making any changes just drive & enjoy, PS IT SOUNDS REAL GOOD ALSO |
