Hi to all that enjoy their Camaro's i have been away from it for 34 years ???
Marriage, Marriage & Kids, Marriage no kids !!! nothing exciting in driving dept.
I had a factory ordered 72-Z/28 with all the performance goodies deluxe interior, M22 close ratio 4 speed, 4:10 rear, track bars, headers, big tires & the best set of American aluminum satin finish spoke mags, sure wish i could find then today.
Glass L88 style Motion phase 111 style hood with diaphragm cowl induction.
The car colours were Mohave Gold black stripes with black cloth interior with wood grain.
Dealer said Mohave Gold was not an option for Camaro's in 72 ??? only on the Monte Carlo's, he ordered it anyway, i guess GM had no union issues then!!!
This car ran great when i picked it up from the dealer on first day, took up two lanes for a bit till i let off the gas pedal go figure.
This car was LT1 350 @ 295 HP ??? where did this set of numbers come from???
Week two after my feet started to work for me i raced a few friends hummmm
big suprise, 440 GTX auto gone just tail lights in the distance, knew the car was quick but ??? second try 340 Duster auto, said it was stock??? but he had a shelf of trophies at home, guess you can't trust some friends!!!
To have your pride & dreams killed by the Chrysler guy's, not a good thing.
Went home with the thought of lemon on my mind !!!!!!!!!
Did some reading and went to the garage opened the tool box removed the rear spoiler Z-28 decal & front grill emblem, "Not much of a weight loss" didn't improve my performance at all????? then i took all the emision system off tubes, pump etc; can't belive i paid all that money for scrap metal!!!!!!
Anyway re jetted the holley, Mallory duel point distributor and lots of timming adjustments lots of Sunoco 260 and lots of road tests, one rear set of tires gone.
Guess it all helped, Duster in my rear view mirror his 12.8 to my 12.2 with borrowed slicks. GTX 440 still got me by a fender, guess Big blocks in any car are better!!! NOT. The LT1 350's were the best back in the early 70's to most.
R.I.P. sorry to say that a year after i sold the car "1974" the young guy put it into the guard rail he was ok but the car went to musle car heaven i felt very bad for the car, and why did i sell it still on my mind. it's not like having two ladies in your life?????????????????????? all i have left is the Z28 decal on my tool box and the T handle inside, gave all pic's away with car.
MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE WROTE A BOOK
" MY CAR MY LIFE WITH THE OTHER WOMAN " how original

Now for the good news, i went to Illinois in March 2006 after looking on
E-BAY for a new " Other Woman " to view some cars, some are very costly and some should be in Musle Car heaven. This is harsh as junk in the field is better than no junk in the garage.
So i lucked out and bought a car that the other guy's wife said no you cant have it, do i feel sorry for him, Not. he gets to keep his B%@#$chy wife and i got the Car THANK YOU. Sorry she could be a nice person!!!!!!
Now for the fun 1971 Z-28 Rally Sport matching #'s 350/TH350 restored California car new paint very good job in Hugger Orange with white stripes didn't think i liked this color before, i do now. except for a few missing items like no horns or button on wheel, no rear park brake parts in drums, cable ends ??? no working wiper motor??? i guess things in the USA are different then here in Canada.
No brakes, horns, wipers, means wont certify and no plates, only minor items to fix, fixed and then on the road to drive nights, ok now for the bad news oil smoke every were, seems rear seal, oil pan gasket and tranny started to leak badly, after two weeks of this the decision to remove the motor and tranny was made. As i looked at car with motor on floor and tranny next to it not a pretty site deams turned to " did i make a big mistake" ??? I am old school you may as well re due the whole engine completly and you know it is right. As i phoned around to see who could re due the block & heads the answer was give us the block and we will put all new heads etc. to finish. Engine was running very good and strong, compression was 160 + -2 on all cylinders and heads were done in the past, don't know when engine was worked on!!!
So i started looking for new gaskets & seal along with lots of other dress up parts. As i read the paper at work on car parts for sale not 20 min. from my home this car guy has a long list of parts for sale a DZ 302 engine new and not one but two Real Gen IV LS7 454 engines, next day i am there in the garage, one engine is in a 1969 camaro running, this is a drag car, not for the street, the other in plastic tub full of oil and wraped. This is his spare motor but he has changed his mind and gets a 540 to race with, so the running engine in car or the new wraped one??? Hellow in 2 min. I WILL TAKE the new motor, This is a long block ass'y with extra parts to go with, Edelbrock Torker 2-R intake, Moroso kick out chrome pan, he asks me what cam i would like in it and what equipment is on the car, so he installed a 520 lift with 242 intake and 242 exhaust cam, he supplies new solid lifters and Crane gold roller rockers with locking nuts, plus an engine stand so i can work on the engine and when completed just retun it. When it was all said and done "cash paid "
he said if i need any help to set up and run give him a call i said ok home i go.
So sitting in my garage looking at this very big engine like i just won the lottery i started to put things together, then around the corner is a hot rod speed shop so i talk to him about the parts i will need, Holly 870 street avenger, MSD distributor, aluminum water pump, Power Master mini starter & alternator, Be Cool rad and the list goes on and on $$$$$$$ in his eyes
Then the tranny problem the TH350 shifts ok Just needs a pan gasket & filter
so i get the parts to fix done??????? then i remember how great it was to drive that 4 speed back when.! Guess what i call Keisler in TN and order a complete TKO 600 5 speed conversion kit, they supplied from fly wheel to rear u joint. This is a great package, And three weeks later i am putting the engine and tranny into this what i hope to be a supercar. Now that i have put 1000 miles on this new car and 50k plus into new hardware not cheep but when i put my foot into it my wife grabs the seat both sides and feet up tight on the floor, this car has more power than i can let out at this time.
Good thing i don't need diapers.
The project is still going forward, anyone that would like to email me on this is very welcome as i have lots of questions on this engine and the HP that it has along with other changes that i have made to this car and a large supply of all the #'s matching parts that will never be put back on.
It's a long story but lots of you may enjoy the read.
Thanks from old zeder in Ontario Canada
