OK I'm swapping in my TPI. I'm using a Small dist from what I think is a 92 donor. I do not have roller cam and I'm worried the dizzy might have the wrong gear (paranoia from some posts on this board). Is there any way to tell. Do the "melonized"(SP) gears look different? Did Gm ever run anything other than a steel gear?

And no laughing and my extreme ignorance OK?

if your scared just swap out the gear.. takes like 2 min and cost like $20, or swap one from another distributor

You're fine. GM roller cam engines (most car V8s from 87-up) had a hardened cam gear pressed onto them when they were manufactured, so they had no special/different distributor gear requirements vs. a flat tappet cam. Aftermarket roller cams can be a different story.

GM factory distributors always had steel gears regardless of the type of cam (roller vs. flat) in the motor.
