I have to go check out a freinds truck this weekend. He described it as making a noise that sounds like a flock of birds under the hood. Almost like a loose belt squeal. He said it is not a belt it is coming from the back of the engine. He said he used a pipe to listen to the internals. The noise can be heard clearly when he placed the pipe on header tubes 4 & 6 but, not on 2 or 8. He said it also has a loud ticking noise that sounds like a loose rocker arm and the engine is running rough. Any ideas? Sorry this is kinda 3rd party. I havent heard the noise first hand just going by what he said. The motor is a 350 sbc.

Rod/main bearings can make a very loud screaching noise when they go.

Vader, first of tell your friend to check for a leaking exhaust gasket. If its loose enough it will make a screeching sound and also my car made a loud clicking noise and it was also a loose exhaust bolt. They could be related or could not. First just make sure everything on the exhaust is nice and tight and see if anything changes.

Well, he did say that it didnt seem to be coming from the bottom end. Instead seemed to coming from the top end. Dont suppose there is a way check the valve guides without pulling the head? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/frown.gif

pull the spark plug, piston at bottom, feed one long continuous piece of string into cylinder.turn crank by hand to bring piston as high as poss.Use lever style spring tool and remove retainer.check valve stems for play

A loose flexplate bolt will sound just like a rod knocking.
