All right so now that I'm completely pissed off at my self for lack of knowledge i have decided to ask a few questions. Last week i bought a brand new set of ceramic coated headers for my 75. While taking the old exhaust off i dropped the starter and broke the plastic cap on the solenoid anyway i get a new starter and bolt it up. Well no go so i stop for the day as it was pretty dark and i was on the verge off breaking something. Today I go and shim the starter and replace the battery and still the same thing. It's like the starter is grabbing the flywheel and not turning and then getting stuck. I have no idea what to do now. Someone please give me the knowledge that i need to get this damn car running. Dorry for such a long post. Thanks Jeremy

wires disconnected,, then remove the starter. then remove the solenoid from the starter,,, then bolt the starter back in place without the solenoid. pull the plunger to engage the starter teeth by hand. see what your clearance is. shim accordingly. then pull the starter and reassemble the solenoid to the starter and put it all back up there with the correct shims you found to be right. good luck,, hope it helps. let us know.

I always gap a starter using a 1/8" drill bit. Place the bit between the shaft of the starter and the teeth of the flywheel. The bit should have a slight amount of play.

You can buy starter shims in a package at a HELP display if I remember right at your local parts place. I think three or four different thicknesses are in the package??

It took four starters from Auto Zone to get one that worked properly. After the first two the rookie sales person questioned my abiltiy to install a starter. That's when I asked to see the manager who is a good friend of mine. He said, "give the man a starter and test it like he told you to before he leaves the store."

Yeah I used to go through starters like crazy so I bought a new GM starter 2 or three yrs ago and been problem free ever since.

Sometimes if it is a remanufactured starter, the mating surface of the starter to the block is not perfectly straight. You may have to cut the shims in half and have more on one side than you do on the other to get the teeth to engage right. Its a pain, but take your time and dont settle for "close enough". It may take a few times putting it in and out replacing shims. You will be a bunch happier in the end!

Alright so everyone says i should just re-shim the starter. I already have it shimed to 1/8 " between the shaft and the fly wheel.s i will try and kick it out to an angle and see what happens. Ill let everone know.

I've had bad luck with NAPA and Autozone. Rebuilds aren't what they used to be. I ended up buying GM.

I just called my local dealer and he said first the computer wouldn't go back to 75 so we tried 76 and then said the part had been discontinued and is not available. so I guess ill just try napa again.

didnt really read through all the posts, but i had a similar frustrating problem i messed with for days until i figured it out when i put a new crank in my old 327 i had....i ended up having to cut the shims in half and putting them on the outside bolt only,to tilt the starter in......

well i got a new starter in and found out that my ground wasn't good. So i changed it out and got it to turn over correctly. But while doing that i burned up a wire from my starter to the harness. I guess i will try and fix that tomorrow.
