View Full Version : Air breather question...
RockerMomsHotwheels 02-17-2007, 12:23:40 AM Just speaking open element chrome air breather type...
Does size matter? Say smallest to the largest...Does one flow air better than the other...Same filters too...Some use the larger one but I like the small ones cause I like to see the carb and intake...
3origZlovers 02-17-2007, 12:37:03 AM So many choices...and most would be OK except...Hi-horsepower drag strip, etc. ..use a large diameter K&M air cleaner.
My choice for the money is a nice looking chrome 14x3 air cleaner..depending on your clearance you can use the low profile or regular height. I'm using a 1 7/8 x 14 on my son's car because I can't close the hood. 300-36 Holley Hi-rise intakes will do that. When he gets his 2" cowl induction hood, I'll go back to the 3inch. Car is mainly for cruises and shows so I'll take the money(K&M) and use it elsewhere on the car....:bowtie: The 78Z

TRQJNKY 02-17-2007, 12:42:19 AM a little info i gained from working on a nascar team...
we put a k&n filter on a car for fun on a dyno pull, lost horsepower compaired to a paper element air filter.....
3origZlovers 02-17-2007, 12:44:29 AM lost horsepower? Thats interesting..
TRQJNKY 02-17-2007, 12:51:32 AM another thing, if you look at the demos for the k&n filters with the ping pong ball in the air tube, notice how many pleats (folds) are in the "other" brand, there are like 2 times the amount of pleats = a lot of resistance to airflow. that demo is a joke...
RockerMomsHotwheels 02-17-2007, 12:54:24 AM Yes that is interesting...My question is regarding the size...width,not height..so using the same paper element filter, same height...will a 14inch flow air better than say a 10inch...The air in a 14inch has further to travel to get to the carb than a 10inch and I was wondering if a larger diameter breather calms the air down at all so it flows better...This is kind of hard to explain what I mean...I guess the key word would be tubulance...within the breather.
TRQJNKY 02-17-2007, 12:57:13 AM bigger= better
its all about the surface area the air has to travel through, more is better.
RockerMomsHotwheels 02-17-2007, 12:59:22 AM This is my small breather...I just like to see the carb too...especialy when its a Holly...

TRQJNKY 02-17-2007, 01:01:36 AM holley, yuck.. lol j/k, theres not much better. all the demon carbs are based on hollys and so are the proforms.

I know everyone has their favorite carb but to me if they are new or rebuilt right they will work just fine for what I will ever need...I do think the Holly carb looks better...and a Demon looks GREAT but $$$$
Nate81camaro 02-17-2007, 01:50:49 AM Does size matter?
:o LOL, I was told it did! :o
Seriously, yes. I have a 10" $30 Edelbrock filter at the moment, but I just bought a 14" X 2 3/4" (with a 1 1/4" drop base) k&n xstream filter assembly ($120) from summit. If your filter is too small it'll be restrictive on airflow and choke off your motor (just like heads, intake, or too small of a header tube would)

This is the air cleaner set-up that I run. It works good with a cowl hood.

Wow that is nice...all of it...thanks...
night rider 02-18-2007, 02:29:57 AM Yes.. Bigger flows more.. You need to look at surface area.
If you want to go smaller DIA. then to make up for the lost of flow, you have to go taller in height.
Like 10" x 3" vs 14" x 2"

Got up this morning and went and exchanged the 10inch for a 14inch....
Looks so much better...
1981z28owner 02-18-2007, 07:55:26 AM the cleaner pictured a few posts up is mine. I use the KN 14 by 3 with the KN Xtreme air top. It works great with my cowl hood.
