My camaro bogs when I hit the brakes or take a sharp turn. I've been told that I need to adjust the float level. How exactly do I do that, I'm fairly competant with an engine but have never adjusted float levels. I have a stock rochester quadrajet. Thanks guys.

The metal arms that come out of the back of the float need to be bent according to whether you want to raise or lower the level. There should be small "v"-shaped notches on either arm, this is where you need to bend. Adjust A LITTLE at a time.

Hold the phone there.

Did someone modify/rebuild this carb. just prior to this stalling/bogging effect starting?

If not- then the float level is probably OK, but the float may just be stuck- you can loosen it by getting a small straw or one of those plastic tubes you get on cans of WD40 or such and knocking the float around through the top of the carb (the spaces on either side of the aircleaner stud). Don't bang the straw in there, just go down enough for rod to stop and then tap-tap-tap it there- if float has been stuck, this should loosen it off.

This is a rebuilt carb that I bought at a parts store. It's been doing this right out of the box, any suggestions?

Float level should be a little more than 1/4" down as measured from the top of the main casting to the top of the float, out on the end of the float. You have to take the airhorn casing off the top of the carb to check it. Adjusting it is done exactly as Sharpeye said. You will have to have 3 hands to check it, though. You need to hold down on the float fulcrum (so it doesn't pop up) as well as the needle valve side of the float arm to pop the float up to it's highest postion both at the same time while you also take the float measurement out at the other end of the float. It'll make more sense when you get the carb apart than it does just reading it.

Also, your symptoms sound a LOT like they forgot to put the black plastic fuel bowl "stuffer" into the carb. It's job is to keep fuel from sloshing forward in the float bowl under braking (and somewhat during sharp turns) and killing the engine. It's also located in the foat bowl and you have to take the airhorn off to see it. It'll be obvious if it's in there or not- big black plastic thing right on top, covering up about 1/2 of the front of the fuel bowl.

Make sure the little spring on the seat the goes on the float hasnt fallen off either. This happened to me a few days after I rebuilt my Qjet. Gave me the exact same symptoms. Found the needle sitting in the bowl and put it back on securly and I havent had the problem since.
