Got my car running finally, sorta.

When it's cold, it fires right up, whether the choke is open or closed. It runs OK, but it knocks really bad.

This is an 8.5 to 1 454 with a 750 Edelbrock(carb and engine are brand new), XE 268 cam. Initial timing was at 12, backed down to about 10 and it made no difference.

Took it up to put better gas in it to try and cure the knocks, and it ran fine until I came to a stop sign, then it sputtered and died. Sat for a little bit, finally got it fired up, drove it home, put it in park, let it idle a little bit, and it died again and wouldn't start again. The only way I can get it to start is to hold it to the floor, and then it's a maybe.

Tried to adjust the idle screws all the way in, but that makes little to no difference. It's running super rich, because I can smell it, but I don't get any black smoke out the pipes.

So what do I do? I don't work with carbs very well, and I can't drive it very far because if I have to stop, it dies and probably won't start for a while.

Did you put in different pistons to bump the compression on that thing? What kind of knock is it? I deep rapping, getting louder with RPM? How's the oil pressure? Did you follow the cam breakin procedure? Did you keep an eye on the oil pressure while breaking it in?

Edelbrock carbs DO NOT like more than 5.5 PSI of pressure, and they will flood if you go higher.

I'd check fuel pressure.

Edel's REALLY are not happy with more then 5.5 lb.s of pressure. I even backed mine of to 5.25 just to make sure. Had the same problems, running waayy rich with the idle screws almost totally in.
