I am having oil pressure problems.I have a Melling high volume pump. When I am driving I'm carrying 60psi,then when I romp on it the oil press. goes up to 65psi then drops to around 40psi, and will jump back up to around 60psi & drop back down again.I know that means my oil is getting to the top of my engine faster than its getting back down to the pan.I have been told that its because I don't have the right oil capacity w/ a factory oil pan. So would a 7 or 8 quart pan fix this problem? Up for sugetions(sp?). I would just like to get this fixed before I take the Camaro to the drag strip.

Possibly...plus you're prolly aerating(sp) the oil....
Could get a bigger pan (or an LT1 pan).....maybe another 1/2 a qt oil....or some thinner SYNTHETIC oil....

This topic was discussed at great length a couple years ago on here. We all came to the conclusion that the lack of a crank scraper, a windage tray, pan baffles, and pump baffle were contributing to the problem, and not so much the pump. Install those and your problem will go away.

If you are going to go through the trouble of installing all that, you might as well buy another (bigger capacity) pan that has all those goodies in it. That would definately solve your problem.

I highly doubt you are draining the pan. I suspect a pickup problem; spacing from the bottom of the pan.
I wish I new the idiot that started the draining the pan bullshit.

Rick, man I'm with you. That's about one of the dumbest myths I heard.
I would tink pickup prob too.
The pick up has to be 3/8"-1/2" off the pan floor. I shoot for 7/16"
Without that clearance, you just dont have enough room between the floor and pick up for the oil to go, with too much clearance you can suck air, and that aint good at all.
I think sucking the pan dry was a myth that got started cause some guy had way too much clearance and was sucking air, and no oil, so his mind couldnt think about what he couldnt see (air) so he said he sucked the pan dry and ruined his bearings
