Is there an easy way to remove or drop the gas tank to get to the trunk floor pan above it? Any tricks? What is the preferred/best method if not an easy way? Thanks much.

Remove the bolts from the rear where they bolt to the bumper area. This will allow you to lower the tank enough to disconnect the big, circular, metal plug where everything else connects. Rotate the plug counterclockwise with a wide blade screwdriver and taps from a hammer. cmonson 02-12-2007, 12:47:34 PM I just did mine not long ago. It took about 1.5 - 2 hours total. It was very straightforward. It would have helped to have 2 people though. EricsZ28 02-12-2007, 02:19:45 PM If you do drop it with gas still in it, you can put a jack & a 2x4 under the center of the tank, a little towards the front. Jack it up just enought to take the tension off the straps. Then remove the straps completely. Don't forget to remove the ground wire & the sending unit (fuel gauge) wire. After that, use the jack to lower the tank SLOWLY, just being careful that the filler neck clears the bumper. I did this with about 8 gallons of gas in mine, and I didn't spill a drop. If you do take the sender unit out, I would hose off the top of the tank first & let it dry. A lot of dust and sand can accumulate up there. You don't want that in your tank if you plan on reusing it. It took me about 20 minutes to drop my tank. There is no better time to replace the pickup screen on your sending unit... Grumpy 427 02-12-2007, 09:50:33 PM Firt thing you do is lie to your best buddy to get him to come over to your house to help you. Feed him a beer or 2 then take him out to the garage and ask him to help you look at something LOLOLOLOL. They come out pretty easy, just make sure you have all the tools you need under the car and a floor jack, or your best buddy LOL Batman 02-13-2007, 02:01:47 AM While I've never used one, I've always thought that a motorcycle jack (the hydraulic ones) would be the easiest, since they spread the weight over a larger area. jamieg285 02-14-2007, 11:15:27 AM Firt thing you do is lie to your best buddy to get him to come over to your house to help you. Feed him 1 beer before, and promise more after the jobs done ;) THOMAS81Z 02-14-2007, 09:40:09 PM i have had mine out a bunch of times in my 81 i jack up the rear axle crawled under and put my knees up against the tank and undid the straps and lowered it down but best to do it with a jack and an empty tank 71 Camaro 02-15-2007, 02:15:43 AM i have had mine out a bunch of times in my 81 i jack up the rear axle crawled under and put my knees up against the tank and undid the straps and lowered it down but best to do it with a jack and an empty tank Cool man, then you get to keep all the beer for yourself. :D |
