View Full Version : Speakers in package tray
cadmanmeg 02-12-2007, 01:52:37 AM So I was thinking that two enclosed 10's and 2 open 6X9's would be a good way to go for good sound quality in my '78. I do not think I can do this though if I add a rear window defroster, correct?
Also, for some of you who have elaborate sound system in your rig, what kind of setup do you recommend or have? Thought I had read that going the route I mentioned was a good way. Or, would I be better with a box in the trunk and then the 6X9's enclosed? Will also have spreakers in the door as well.
Thanks for any input all of you can give!
Twisted_Metal 02-12-2007, 09:28:07 AM The blower type defraoster will not physcally fit with 2 10" subs & 2 6x9s. You might be able to squeeze a single sub in the deck with the defroster and 6x9s. If you're talking about the grid type defroster, no problem.
I used a trunk-mounted 10" Infinity Basslink II for the sub in mine.
Speakers in doors... one of my pet peeves. :(
I would consider it only if my door panels were already cut. I used the factory speaker frame to mount 2 3.5" speakers in the center of the dash and super tweeters at the top of the "A" piller to enhance stereo separation.
In music, the highs are very directional. Pumping the sound out of the door panels at your knees is not the best positioning. I know many people do it and factory systems have them in the doors too but if you compare sound quality, the higher the speakers are in the doors, the better they sound, IMO.
tom3 02-12-2007, 10:33:32 AM I'd go for a couple really good 8s with an adapter in the 6x9 holes with an enclosed box. Or build a box and channel the sound through the 6x9 holes. I've always wondered if you could get a split back rear seat and put a speaker panel/box between the seat backs? Take some doing and fab work but would make for good sound. Hate to think of big speakers in the trunk like most people do, what does that do to the rear sheet metal? I've tried several different setups in my Camaro, gave up on it.

I can't stand cars that rattle with the beat either. I'm only running 250 watts to my sub so it is a pretty tame system by comparison to some of the "pounders" you hear on the sreet.
I mounted my sub to a plywood panel and used butyl rubber windshield rope to stick it to the trunk floor. (No holes accidentally drilled into the gas tank this way! :D )
It helps dampen the physical vibration so I only get a small rattle at the rear license plate if it is cranked to pain-inducing levels. I didn't even bother with Dynamat.
grasmo 02-12-2007, 12:17:11 PM i put two 6x9s and two 10"s in the deck. i built the box for the subs out of 1/4" aluminum. it's very compact. you can't even see it when the trunk is open unless you kneel down. i've got an old power 650 mounted to the back of the box. the imaging is excellent with no vibration noise. grasmo.
BonzoHansen 02-14-2007, 12:08:45 PM Given trunk size, I think a single 8 or 10, along with decent deck speakers & something in the dash would be good for the typical rocking driver. Not the insane audiophile, of course. :)
That is what I probably plan on doing eventually.

This sounds like a great sub system for our cars. Doesn't fill up your trunk.
Is it ported, passive or a solid box? Got a pic?
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
The original poster was asking about this kind of system WITH a defroster. Did we even find out what kind of defroster he meant?

It is for me! I'm still curious about the 1/4" aluminum box now that it was mentioned. (My youngest son is learning TIG welding in school and might be able to pull it off for a class project. )
cadmanmeg 02-14-2007, 03:55:17 PM I know there were a few folks on here that had very extensive systems in there cars and even went in depth about them, but I cna not seem to find those post.
The defroster I am talking about is the rear window defroster that was an option. In any event, I decided to pass on this endevour for now.
All this talk has lead me to another question though, will the back deck support the weight of 2 6X9's and 2 10's?
dui's Z 02-14-2007, 04:19:42 PM Cadmanmeg. What dimension do you have for your sub-box? I had a huge 2x10 box that I'm trying to mod. I'm looking to get it as small and light as possible. I was also tinkering with the idea of making some fiberglass enclosers. Like mounting a sub at both corners of the trunk behind the taillights.
cadmanmeg 02-15-2007, 01:10:54 AM No dimension as of yet. Just trying to get the trunk resto done first. But being the audiophile that I am, I am always thinking of sound. The 2 best cars ever made for audio were the 2nd gen Camaro's and the older style VW Bugs/Bettles.

yes it supports them fine. i was surprised. i thought i might have to gusset the sub box to the back seat but it's solid. and that's after cutting the rear deck out that has the strength creases and then putting just a flat piece back in. grasmo.
KansasTwister 03-16-2007, 11:56:07 AM you want a speaker system? currently ive got a setup of 2 factory 3.5s up front on the orignal am/fm cassette. It had the highest speaker you could get in 1980, to bad the rear speakers didnt last to long in the rear.
