View Full Version : Vortec heads, rockers, and pushrods
ORANGE77 02-11-2007, 02:29:50 PM I found a set of 906 vortecs for sale that I might jump on. He's selling them w/ rockers and pushrods, but he did not mark them upon removal. He said about 25,000 miles on the heads. Should I not take a chance on the pushrods (His) and use mine at 36K, if they check out. I like the idea he's offering the rockers too. Would I be OK with those too, because they"re not marked also. Heads look real good from pictures and he wants 225 plus shipping.:)
cmonson 02-11-2007, 04:59:42 PM Some may say otherwise, but I am a firm believer that you replace lifters when you replace your puhrods.
Your pushrods work a wear pattern into the lifters.
The price of pushrods and HYD lifters is not much as long as your not running a 450+ HP small block. If it were me, I would just but new...
Also regarding te $225. Are you aware that you can buy brand new vortecs from jegs for $269 each ($540 total). They are good up to .475 lift and come with springs, valves, self aligning rockers. You can get more lift if you need for about an extra $100 with some beehive springs and special retainers.
Buying someones elses at $225 you are buying used heads. I would not let them near my motor with some machine work or at least gone through from a shop. Not that used parts are bad, but remember it is used...
For the money and work involved, just buy new IMHO...

Your point is well taken. This was 225 a pair. Pictures can hold fause promises. And it was on Ebay, aka EvilBay.
hardline_42 02-11-2007, 07:00:09 PM Used Vortec heads go for about $200 to $300 a pair complete with rockers so $225 is about right. IIRC, you don't get rockers with a new set of heads. The stock rockers are fine unless you're trying to extract every ounce of HP out of the combo. Just check the heads for cracks around the rocker stud bosses and steam holes. Definitely get them checked prefessionally before installing them. Also check out the Vortec sticky for any questions.

I have looked at that sticky many times Hardline and it has lots of info. Dirt and you did a great job. What's your opinion on the Enginequest Vortecs that Clearwater Cylinder Heads (Ebay) now has to offer. They say thicker castings. Should that be much of a concern for me vs. say the GM Vortec from S.Dickey, Jegs, etc. IMO, I do not think so. I'm not going beyond 480 to 500 lift. Something like 212/216 intake and 222 or so on the exhaust with my 342'S on the car now and maybe a 2000 stall convertor added later. What do Dirt or you think :)
Dirt Reynolds 02-11-2007, 08:46:43 PM PHR did a build a few months back on a 350 with the EQ Vortecs. It made 447HP with a 224° hyd roller cam. I don't know much about them but they seem to be a good value for the power output.

Dirt, I did recall seeing that article before. Interesting is the dished pistons. I don't expect that kind of power. I'm leaving my bottom end go. My miles are low at 36K. I'll be using a flat tappet hyd. Trying something similar to the GM 350 HO, 330 hp motor but with my original 2-bolt block. I've been thinking of that same 330 hp cam, Crane, Isky, Linati (not nessesary the voodoo series) and Summit (or Summits cam maker). :bowtie:
