Hey folks...
Any way to adjust the amount of mechanical advance in HEI distributors? I have heard that you can pull the weights and the plate the weights sit on, lift it up a bit and put it back down on a different spline or something to that effect. True or Horse$h!t?

Those splined distributors are in the same box with muffler bearings. Most people don't need to adjust the amount of mechanical advance, rather the rate it comes in. This is easily controlled with different weights and springs.

A factory HEI? You need to change centerplates. They have a 3 digit number stamped on them. Look for ones with different numbers than what yours has. I don't have a chart showing what the numbers mean or equate to, nor have I ever run across such a chart in 20 years of playing around with these things. Purely a "try a different one and see what happens" kinda thing. Most V8 HEIs give around 20* of centrifugal advance.

Mine stock HEI (1975) gives about 26* of mechanical advance.
