Just looking for confirmation really.

I've got a chance to buy some 3927185 heads, that were originally fitted to an early 70's 327.

According to mortec, these are 70cc heads that fit 307, 327 & 350. I figure that is a decent sized cc to go to to increase compression (without going to far and having to change anything in the bottom end)

I believe that these will fit my 400, but should have the steam hole drilled.

Am I right?

All 1st gen small-block heads pretty much interchange with the exception of the steam holes and valve interference (ie you can't put 2.02 valve heads on a small bore block - NOT a concern for you if you have a 400 block)

However, if these are early '70s heads it sounds like they _might_ be small valve 307 heads (327's were not used at all after 1969 IIRC). Small valve low performance 307 heads are the LAST thing you want on a 400 because they will really choke the motor. If you can afford it at all you should step up to some Vortec heads - but at the very least get some stock 1.94" valve heads.

As long as you drill the steam holes and the heads are sound there is no reason they will not work.

Stay away from the 185 castings, they are 1.72 valve only and are the only castings to have a small exhaust port exit. (supposidly to be a passive EGR attempt) They do not belong on any performance engine.
