View Full Version : Attention Any Blower Motorheads
Hearsekid 02-09-2007, 08:02:43 AM I own a 87 Corvette,, i know you feel sorry for me,, but here is what I am doing,,, I really want a Big Als Toybox Phase 1 blower engine 355 cubic inch for the vette,,,,I have the cash to buy the engine but im wondering if his engines actually kick ass or just look good or, what kind of builder he is, will that thing run with such small valves? 1.94 and 1.5 on the exhaust? do i need the screw in studs with this motor? will this engine work with the existing 700r4 ? will the blower pulleys clear the front frame portion on a vette? ANY AND ALL help is really appreciated,, I just cant afford to buy one of his engines an then run into a bunch of problems later on........:bowtie: thanx fellas p.s. will the gm rods that comes with his phase 1 with arp rod bolts last under normal to occasional street race abuse?
BlownBigBlock 02-09-2007, 08:36:45 AM Since your asking vette specific questions - wouldn't it be advisable to go over to www.corvetteforum.com in the C4 section and ask?
As far as how good his engines are, there is a local guy with a street rod that has one of his motors, no problems with it. I believe "theFlash" on here bought one his motors for a chevelle and actually lives close to the guy.
Or you could do what some people might consider the obvious - call him and ask...
Tokyo Torquer3 02-09-2007, 10:36:24 PM I know Al very well.... he has every thing from cheapo blown 355"s that run fine but dont expect any more than 480-500hp to aluminum block solid roller thumpers. You seem to be talking about his Phase I units withh the smog iron heads with 1.94 intake valves.. he is fine to deal with and the cheapest around, but the price you pay will reflect the parts you get. However, he will build anything you want including some high end units if you pony up the money. You have to know what you are asking for. If you dont, you get a Phase I motor for guys who just want a blower.
blown1981z28 02-09-2007, 11:17:54 PM I talked to them a couple of months ago for a customer. Most of their cheaper motor are all show. When I inquired about the 355 I was told it made around 350-380 horsepower. They are a good company and have never heard anything bad about them.
Hearsekid 02-10-2007, 02:51:21 AM And I do go to Corvette forum sometimes, but I just thought Id ask for your crews imput thats all,, and the last post who informed me that the "cheapo" blower motor 355 he builds only has 380 has helped me out a great deal,,,<<thank you for that tidbit<<.. So what would you suggest I buy from him to get me 450-500 horse,, as far as blower engine crates go? And I think I like this side of the fence a lil better than corvette forum cause of the diversity of owners and thier cars, over there its just vettes pretty much, and who likes to eat the same cereal everyday? SO MADD PROPS TO NASTYz28.com:bowtie: :whine:
Tokyo Torquer3 02-10-2007, 06:16:03 AM ask for a Phase II or Phase III engine.. Assuming you are still on a budget, but want better than a blower on a stock engine....make sure you get aftermarket cylinder heads - 200cc Dart Pro 1's or similar, ask for a SCAT 4340 crank (no Eagle cranks!) and Scat or Eagle H-beam rods, and buy the BDS or Littlefield blower (No Weiand) with a new case with 8mm pulleys (not 1/2" drive). Also get the new Holley carb kit he now sells.. quite nice. He will use probably a Speed Pro forged piston (he uses JE for higher end motors, but Speed Pro is just fine and lower buck) and I saw the specs on the new hydraulic cam he now uses on a generic 355 which is quite nice. At 8 pounds or so of boost, this will give you no less than 520-540hp... perhaps a little more and more low end torque than you know what to do with. If you follow the recipe above, you will not be dissatisfied. It will be a few dollars more than this standard Phase I or II engine, but much cheaper than what other builders will ask, and I am sure you will be happy.
Hearsekid 02-10-2007, 07:06:10 AM tHaNx!! TT for all that related info,, I have a couple questions,1, whats the deal with 8mm pulleys? 2, why no WIEnd blower? anyways I saw your Camaro and its effen sick! really tight car man! thanx for talkin to me this is my first blower engine and i dun wanna screw it up..............:bowtie:
blown1981z28 02-10-2007, 07:12:17 AM They will work with you just tell them what you are looking for horsepower wise. And there is nothing wrong with Weiand superchargers I am on my 6th one. No problems yet.
Tokyo Torquer3 02-10-2007, 07:14:39 AM The Weiands with the new cases are much better, but they dont have a reputation for having good tolerances (keeps boost from leaking past rotors at low rpm) and attentional to detail as the others. They work just fine and make boost, but seem to be directed at the hot rod crowd that just wants a blower and not necessarily the best in performance.
The 8mm pulleys will make a better blower whine that most of us like even when no load on engine, is much stronger, and is easier to adjust as it doesnt tighten up as much as a 1/2" drive, in my experience.
blown1981z28 02-10-2007, 07:24:20 AM They are reasonably priced. For someone with a budget in mind they are great. I have no complaints. Frankly if you are interested in real performance you would steer away from a roots and go to a screw or centrifugal supercharger. Roots style superchargers are inefficient by nature.
softail1940 02-10-2007, 11:22:38 AM build the motor yourself at lease you know what you are getting and dont have to worry about mismatch parts installed in a motor your paying 8K for... thats just my advice from living in the area
