View Full Version : drop base air cleaner for edelbrock carb
RS_SS350 04-26-2004, 01:56:00 PM i just got a new EPS manifold, now my air cleaner stud and wingnut sit a bit too high, like 1/2 inch or an inch. will a drop base air cleaner remedy this? anyone know a specific drop base air cleaner that will fit on top of a performer carb without linkage interferance?
thanks
badass78 04-26-2004, 02:26:00 PM there are a few different drop base sizes. I think the lowest you can drop and still fit around an edelbrock carb is 7/8 of an inch, which is a pretty standard drop. You should be able to find one pretty easy, and it should work fine if you are only a half an inch too high.
Air_Adam 04-26-2004, 02:33:00 PM Go to the junkyard or to Ebay and look for the dual snorkel air cleaner for the L69-powered Camaros and Monte SS. Its a drop base, and breathes extremely well!
Paint it gloss black and it looks great too http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
RS_SS350 04-26-2004, 02:34:00 PM thanks.
i hope it's only a half inch, but i think it may be more like an inch... i hope i don't have to get a cowl hood..
Damon 04-26-2004, 04:13:00 PM Any parts store drop-base 14x3 will fit the Edelbrock carb, although you may need to space it up a little to clear the linkage.
Two best ways I've found to space up an air cleaner:
1. For small spacers you can simply use a Holley super-thick air cleaner gasket. Works great for anything less than about 3/8" of spacing. You can also cut and tear it apart like a stack of pancackes if you don't need it's full height.
2. For slightly more spacing (1/2"+) Edlbrock makes plastic spacer rings in 1/2" and 3/4" height that work well with just about any cheap open element 4bbl air cleaner and carb.
PRIMER79R 04-26-2004, 05:20:00 PM you will also need a fuel "banjo" fitting. most drop bases will not clear the straight fitting.....
speedyrev 04-26-2004, 05:51:00 PM If you have an electric choke, it's gonna cause probs too.
RS_SS350 04-26-2004, 05:53:00 PM i've already got the banjo fitting, but i do have the electric choke... dammit! i guess i screwed myself with this manifold..
Chuck78 04-26-2004, 08:10:00 PM If I have a vette dual snorkel air cleaner that hits the float adjustment screws on a Holley 4150/4160, and I need a banjo fitting, can I assume that this is a drop base? Looks like the 5.0 H.O. L69 unit sorta. Not sure what year vette, but same snorkel size as the L69, and some later 70's/early 80's Trans Am air cleaner snorkels. I know vettes have more hood clearance issues than Camaros, so I assume it is.

Kunihiro 04-26-2004, 09:19:00 PM RS SS350,
I had a problem too with my air cleaner assembly not seating properly because of my Air Gap manifold and AVS Thunder carb with the electric choke.
I ended up getting that Edelbrock carb to air cleaner assembly spacer (like the one Damon mentioned) and that solved my clearance problem with the air cleaner assembly. If you do get the spacer and you still have a problem with hood clearance, you can always use a thinner (or shorter)element.

I am getting away without using a banjo fitting w/ a edelbrock carb and edelbrock drop-base 14" filter. Its a tight fit, but it works.

RS_SS350 04-26-2004, 10:56:00 PM thanks for all the helpful advice guys, i think i know what to do now. i will let you know what happens...
RS_SS350 04-28-2004, 11:15:00 PM hey guys,
well, i decided on the mr. gasket low rider air cleaner - this is one sharp looking air cleaner, probably too sharp for the rest of the engine, but i'll get to that at a later date.
just one problem, the wingnut stud is WAY too long... how do i cut one of these down without screwing up the threads on the end? last time i tried doing this to a previpous one, i was hardly able to get the stud into the carb, or if i flipped it, get the wingnut on it...
by the way, here's a pc of the air cleaner

Bondo79 04-28-2004, 11:24:00 PM You can use a hacksaw, and then file down the rough edges.

KeysZ 04-29-2004, 10:52:00 AM After you file the end, if you still have thread issues, get a regular nut the same size and run it through from the other end and it will "fix up" the threads for you.
Air_Adam 05-01-2004, 06:22:00 PM The L69 air cleaner and the Corvette one are the same I think, only the lid is different. I've heard about the interference problems with using a double pumper carb too. I can't remember what you do to fix it though.
1981coupe400ci 05-01-2004, 08:09:00 PM put a nut on the threaded rod.. cut the rod with a hack saw.. then twist the nut off over the freshly cut end of the rod... works to clean up the threads everytime
RS_SS350 05-01-2004, 08:26:00 PM done! now there's another problem lol! the aircleaner is so close to the HEI that it will get it the way when turning it to time the engine... guess i can put the old aircleaner on it while i time it..
thanks for all the help guys... now i just need to find a shop that carries the correct fuel pump for my car - Kragen tried to sell me the wrong one and i just walked out - lol!
undertow 03-14-2005, 05:33:00 PM Hey RS_SS350,
What's the part number on that Low Rider Air Cleaner? I have the EPS 1406 Edelbrock Carb and the Air Cleaner I have is making the hood close horribly. I need better clearance.
Thanks!
RS_SS350 03-14-2005, 10:45:00 PM hey undertow, on www.summitracing.com (http://www.summitracing.com,) the part is MRG-4339...
the problem i ran into with this, is that the back of the cleaner was cramping the front most ignition wires by the distributor, so what you need to do is get yourself an air cleaner spacer, part MRG-9340
now it sits nicely, and looks real good, here's a pic:

i'm not done cleaning up the engine yet, but i don't think it looks too bad now

undertow 03-15-2005, 07:29:00 PM Thanks for the reply!
Hmm, pic didn't work. I was curious how'd it look and what kind of clearance difference it'll make.
RS_SS350 03-15-2005, 07:47:00 PM there it is... Ofot was not letting me hot link, but i fixed that!
undertow 03-16-2005, 08:12:00 PM Thanks RS_SS350, you just saved me some money =P
