I'm going to start looking for mini starters for my 72 307 SBC ... now what ever starter i get needs to be interchangable with a 350 or 383 as that is what i will be switching too very soon. I have a carbon fiber heatshield on its way to my house, and now i want to find a good quality starter for not an outrageous price. I'd prefer to order from Jeg's as i have a gift certificate for there, does anyone have recomendations of a good starter? I'd like to be under $200.

Links work wonders.

If you were in the South I would say go to http://www.barnettperformance.com/images/welcome.gif

Barnett's is like Jegs and Summit and can be cheaper. I got my mini starter, Harwood hood, all kinds of stuff from Barnett's. The only thing is you have to call, great people though.

I've had good luck with this Summit mini starter:

I've had this one for several years. Just keep swapping it from one motor to the next. Currently turning a 10.5:1 388 with no probs. $159.00

I've got the same one, had it for about a year, and had ZERO problems.

Stay away from the cheap Ebay ministarters. They're crap.

No, that's the same brand, but different model. Not sure what the difference is as far as performance. Maybe somebody else here has some experience with that one?

Ok...so im gonna get a starter...but im not at home and i have a question...i probally dont have a 2 bolt staggard pattern right? its a '72 307? So i should be fine getting the one that isn't the staggard bolt pattern correct?

168 tooth flywheel/flexplate uses staggard pattern,, 153 tooth uses straight across pattern.

some aftermarket starters have both patterns for using the straight across pattern. 4 holes in the starter. use the one that apply's to your flywheel/flexplate. hope that helps.

This starter says it works with a 168 and 153 flexplate...but then under it has a different starter for a staggard pattern

i want to say that all the early blocks had both patterns in them. but i'm not positive. i'd make sure first,, before you purchace. i remember that some of the 250 chevy six cylinder blocks were either one way or the other by year split. so,, i'd check first without knowing your block casting number or having looked it yourself. also rotate the flexplate/flywheel ,, mark it and count the teeth to be sure. a missmatch in ordering can take you a week or two longer to get the part in if you have to send it back. but if your block has the straight across pattern,, you can use the 4 hole straight across starter. if it has ONLY the diaganol pattern,, you gotta use that starter,, and that requires the 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate. hope it helps.

Alright...i need some help here ... so i got this starter that i showed before (the first one on the page)
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...0002_761026_-1

And put it in and its wrong...it bolts up fine and all of that fits nice, cool i'm happy. So i'm looking at it and im like thats not going to start the part of the starter that cranks over the motor and engages the flexplate is about an inch to an inch and half away from the flex plate...so i humor myself and turn the key...sure enough no engage...so i guess this starter is wrong huh? but my main question is, why is it wrong? I havn't sent it back to jegs yet but i will be soon... :(

I can't get your link to work, but it sounds like you have the starter bolted in the 168 tooth holes, but your engine has a 153 tooth flexplate. Most of the mini starters I have seen have two sets of holes in them and if you move to the other set of holes it will move the starter over toward the flexplate.

try using the link i posted earlier then maybe that still works ... otherwise i think the part number is 713-9600 ... i did use the other set of holes and then the starter wouldn't even bolt up because it was hitting the block.

maybe this one works ...

I just bought one of these off Ebay. Can't beat the price ($65) and it bolted right up. The only hitch we had with it was the threads on the bolts were crappy so we had to run a die down them. Otherwise, it was a direct fit.

in the pic,, it shows 8 holes surrounding the starter drive,, sometimes you may have to rotate the mounting holes for different applications to make it NOT hit the block. so it shows 4 different positions it can be rotated to use for motor clearance to the block/headers. must use the holes that engage the starter drive and sounds like you need to rotate the starter motor in that mounting block to use your 153 tooth flexplate/flywheel. hope it helps.

Yes I had the same problem mounted the starter fine outside the car. Put the engine in and went to put starter back on. Forgot I was messing with the front and twisted the starter too far. It was hitting the engine and would not mount up. Bad part was laying on my back I couldn't see that it was hitting the block :( . Let me tell you that starter is heavy and looking up just thinking how that would bust your face if it fell was not comforting. Well adjusted it correctly and the starter just slid right in like it did outside the car.

I love being smarter than the part I am working with.... Sometimes.
