355 CID..
(Pi x Bore Squared divided by 4) times crank stroke times the number of cylinders
(3.1415 x (4.030)^2 / 4 ) x 3.48 x 8 = 355 (rounded off)

Huh. I've never seen that formula, but if it works.....
Pi x radius squared = the area of a circle.
Area x length (in this case "stroke") = volume of a cylinder.
Volume of a cylinder x number of cylinders = displacement of an engine.
Pi x 4.060 (2.015 squared) = 12.755
12.755 x 3.48 = 44.3874 ci
44.3874 x 8 cylinders = 355.0992, or rounded off to 355 cid.
ANOTHER way I've seen that works also is...
Bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders = CID
.7854 is Pi divided by 4, so i.e. it's the same as JJFarmer did it, just written differently. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
Confusing enough for ya'?

oh, he'll need math alright...once you start putting all the receipts together to figure out how much you spent!!!

knucklebuster... Tell your 15 year old. With out good math skills you'll never have a good hot rod.
Building engines (and cars) for that matter aint nothing but alot of math. Like when you check, set and talk about cams, bearings, strokes, bore sizes, head flow, runner size, etc
It all comes back to math.
I was like your kid when I was real young. "why do I need to know this, i'll never use it in the real world" ha ha, yeah right.
To build a good race engine, you darn near have to use college level math. Alot of use has done it so much, we don't even think about it and look at it as math, but it is.
I had to go back and teach my self all the math stuff I needed, and should have lernt in school, but I was too stuck on "not needing it in real life"

Your 15 year old doesn't need math in automotive? I dare him to figure out what the odometer linear error rate is for switching from a 275/60-15 tire to a 275/50-15 tire. I wrote a spreadsheet that will tell me in under 3 seconds flat. It will take him about 15 minutes to just shy of an hour to tell me with a calculator. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The formula is the formula for the volume of a cylinder. It is either:
pi x radius ^2 x length
or
pi x (diameter/2)^2 x length.
Radius = 1/2 of the diameter and you square the diameter and the 1/2 making it 1/4...
that's where the "bore diameter/4" comes from.
And to think that pie are square and not round huh? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
