Infect the armpits of the SOB at GM who decided to skip putting access holes for the motor mount bolts in the crossmember. & I'll add another couple thousands worth for the one who decided to use Metric bolts on a 1981.
That meant they were 15mm not a normal 9/16" head so the distributor wrench trick wouldn't work. 2 hours lying on my back to remove 6 bolts, what a joke.
Now that I've vented a bit, on earlier year cars, are these bolts just a grade 8 3/8" bolt? There is no way in hell I'm putting the 15mm's back in.

i really cant figure out why everyone has such big problems with that.. some extensions and a swivel, i think it took us less than an hour to do both sides... but the old mounts were already off because i just cut the heads off the bolts.. why bother saving them if i'm not reusing them i used new bolts with the new mounts and they went it pretty quick...

I agree, it wasnt THAT bad for me either! I just taped up my swivel, put an extension on that, and just held it in place while a friend turned the bolts. Its much easier with two people!

yes you can replace with grade 8 3/8" bolts and nuts. dont know if the members here like it but i push the bolt up from the subframe instead of trying to the the nut on inside the subframe.
like 1981 said a 12" extension and a swivel socket and you are home free. you will go through the gap where the front lower control arm goes through. i also had an old wrench laying around so i took the smoke wrench to it to get the angle i needed for the passenger lower bolt. i could not get a swivel inthere.
ps an impact wrench helps alot http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Greg, man, take the easy way out. You know that hole on the front of the crossmember on the passenger side?
Well after I cussed and threw wrenches across the garage, I grabbed a drill and holesaw and put the same hole on the driver's side of my '81.

HEAVYchev, I'm way lazier than that, I brought my plasma cutter home from work, 30 seconds later, matching access holes.
After supper, I'll put the new mounts in.
Thanks guys for listening to me vent.

I took the EASY way out! I stuck the tip of my welder up there and welded the nut on...instant anchor nut!
