They appear to be glass packs that bolt directly onto the headers with turn downs.

Back in the 70's I ran them for a couple of years on my Z28. I have no idea if they're made the same now as they were then but I can tell you that the ones I had were LOUD. We lived on a hill about 2 miles outside of our small town & my Mom could tell exactly whose house I visited when I was driving around. Those suckers did breathe well though- maybe the most free flowing exhaust I've had on the car, probably due to the fact that they were 3". I wouldn't use em today though just due to the amount of attention they attract from the police.

I haven't used that brand, but I have had two sets of different brand "header mufflers" that bolt directly to the headers over the years. The good side of them is that they are easy to install. The brand I had wasn't exceptionally noisy, but they were too free-flowing, and took away a lot of low end torque from my Camaro. It is more driveable on the street now with a full length exhaust system than it was with header mufflers and no pipes behind them.

I bought a set of Purple Hornies last year after a blown U-joint totaled my exhaust system. They are VERY loud, cop attracting, neighbour annoying, ect.
That kind of loud.
I've never been pulled over for them but I've had a few cops look at me funny when I idled by them.
They are cheap & easy to install but not something you want on a regular driver, I'm building a custom 2 1/2" system to replace them this spring.

i have them on a truck of mine. and they ARE loud. i bought them for the sole purpose of ease of instalation and price.

and i think what Gary S said about taking away low end torque. i think that the main reason they are so lud is becasue they dump out right under the cab. i have been thinking about putting some turn downs on so that it maybe won't be so loud.

two drawbacks.

first, everyone has already pointed out how noisy they are (might as well have open headers)

second, they MUST be well supported. It won't take them long to crack the headers at the collectors, and over time, bend the collector down some. (when metal is heated and sujected to pressure it bends)

Instead of "Purple Hornies", take the time and install Walker/Dynomax/Thrush perforated inner pipe, "Continental Glasspacks" with a full out the back, free flowing tailpipe system AND you will have about as free a flowing exhaust system made, Imho!! (And the noise will be behind your car as you drive)....

And if it is too loud with just single glasspacks on each side, in your opinion, then add a second glasspack right behind the first down each side! (Or a smaller one at the very end on each side like resonators)...

I say to use these Glasspacks b/c they are the only ones that have the smooth inner, un-restricted, perforated center pipes so they flow ALMOST as much as a same size and length "straight-pipe"!!!

And their price is right considering that several of the more modern, high-zoot, high performance mufflers are just fancy glasspacks too!!

BUT remember, your car will cackle like a Redneck's P/U work truck, but I LOVE that "Cop-calling" cackle!!!

i used to hae a set of purple hornies on an old 68 jeep M38A1 with built buick 225 oddfire V6.it had fenderwell headers and this was the only way to run exhaust.it sure sounded nice when attempting steep loose gravel hill climbs.

I've never used a pair but i was looking for a cheap exhaust fix for temporary use. I put glass packs on my old 84 TransAm with a drop in 350 and I'll tell you what that crackle is great when you pull up to fart can 4 popper and rattle their windows windows with the classic smallblock crackle.......uhhhhh..ddddrrrroooolllll....i can't wait to get to get my new Z-28 rollin..........thanks guys

Our 79 Z came with a old set of purple hornies mounted in the exhaust. Not the header mounted ones.
Their LOUD to say the least. You can hear that thing start up from the other side of the school! Sounds about like a rail car when it starts too.
So yea, pretty much like open headers.

I have a vid of our Z running if you want to hear what they sound like. I just dont know how to host it.
