So, I've temporarily replaced my 1983 truck q-jet (non computer) with an Eddy 1406 leaned out two stages cause I live at 6500 feet. The q-jet ran super rich and would fall flat on its face whenever I stomped it. The Eddy runs great leaned out, but I would like to run the q-jet just to say I got it to run right. I was wondering if any of you guys had a good starting point for a high altitude tune on a basically stock 350 (performer intake, vortec heads). It has .073 jets (stamped) and .063 rods (from what I measured) for the primaries currently.
Thanks, any advice or criticism welcomed!

Only that bottom 1/2" of the primary rods ever goes in the jet. Check your mearurement again. You measure the fat part at the top of that 1/2" of metering area- just befor the "shoulder" onto the big main body of the rod. Also, almost all rods are stamped with their size like 52M, 48K, etc.
If it's bogging and running super rich that sounds more like a malfunction(s) of some thing inside the carb than a calibration issue. Possibly something that could be fixed by doing a basic rebuild. 73 jets with most stock rods shouldn't be all that fat. I often start 3 jet sizes richer than that down here near sea level.

Excellent, thank you Damon. I remeasured at that point (and found the stamp), turns out they are 51M. I am doing a basic rebuild as I go, so we shall see what happens.
