how much horsepower could i get from this setup 1978 305 with vortec heads, torker 2 intake, lunati cam 230 duration @ .05 with .480 lift. the heads are port and polished with heavy springs. probably going to use a 600 or 650 carb.

The Vortecs on a 305 will really wake it up, but I would NEVER use a 230 @ .050 cam or a Torker II intake on that small of an engine. Not trying to put you down, but it would be so lazy off the line a V6 Caprice would beat ya http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Instead I'd shoot for a Performer intake and a 215 @ .050 cam. You will be MUCH happier! And when you do find a cam, get a dual pattern with 8-10 degrees more exhaust duration. That really helps the Vortecs.

i already have the cam and intake. the motor came with the car i bought. it was supposed to be a 383 stroker. knew the guy was friends with him so i never doubted him. well i just found out that it is a 305 instead. i kinda figured it would be alittle much for it

The only ones that will screw ya worse than friends are family. Are you sure this guy isn't a distant relative also!
LT's right, save the cam and intake for a larger motor. No sence in giving the ricers an advantage.

running a stall converter probably wouldnt make a difference would it. i looked at summit and the cam they have with the preformer intake is bigger than the one i have. they even list it for a 305. why would they?

You would have a smokin' 350, but those parts would be perfect for a 400!!

not sure if im going to use the 305. i have one piston that was hit by a valve. that same cylinder has some rust on the wall. the plugs have oil on them and the lifters and cam are shot. it also needs a new balancer. probably be easier to put my parts on a good 350 or 400.
