Is there a casting number specific block on a Vortec motor that still has the mechanical fuel pump capability? I found a Vortec motor that has a block off plate on the fuel pump boss.
Another question, do the cams have the fuel pump drive for Vortec motors?
I found this Vortec motor core for $250 and just trying to figure out if I can run the motor without foolin with an electric pump.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

You will need to remove the block off plate and see if the block is drilled completely through to the camshaft.
I have owned 4 Vortec engines. All 4 were 880 castings either 1996 or 1997 models. 3 out of 4 were machined for a mechanical fuel pump pushrod.
The only one that wasn't machined DID NOT have a block off plate. The pushrod hole was not drilled completely and there was not a block off plate covering it.
All of the camshafts that I removed from these engines did not have a fuel pump lobe.

If it has a block off plate on it it is more than likely drilled and ready to go. Usualy you will find these on earlier Vortec engines 96-97 vintage like mentioned above. The 97 350 vortec I rebuilt had a block off plate and was drilled and ready to run a mechanical pump, the cam also has the fuel pump lobe on it (that engine was out of a 97 GMC 1500 4x4 P/U)
