View Full Version : Starting to build the BSE Combo few questions
Happy Johnson 06-30-2004, 02:21:00 PM Hey guys http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gifI found 215 heads and I dropped my engine off yesterday for machine work. Here is the first of many questions.
1. What type of 10 inch TCI converter is used for the BSE combo? Street Fighter? Super Street Fighter?
2. Has anyone else built the combo and had the same results as Ed? Anyone run a modified combo? If so what did you do different and what was the outcome?
3. How much power would I lose running a Edelbrock Torker intake compared to the Perf RPM. How much driveabilty would I lose?
I am building the flat tappet version of the combo.
InitialD 06-30-2004, 06:34:00 PM Happy,
I am trying to build the flat tappet version as well.
1)From what I understand, its a custom built converter.
2)I am not met anyone who has yet, but I also havent met anyone disappointed in the setup either. I have heard of people copying ed's combo on 396's and 427's as well
3) Torker's a single plane, so I imagine you'd have a totally diff powerband. Also, from what I have heard, Ed's RPM is a RECTANGLE PORT manifold, ported to match the oval port heads...that was a gotcha that I didn't know about till recently
Happy Johnson 06-30-2004, 08:29:00 PM Hey InitialD,
How many cubic inches are you building? What heads are you using?
While doing reasearch I found a cam that is like the UD cam it is made by Lunati it is pn 302A8LUN. I called Summit and they told me it was special order and it will take until the 23rd of July to get it at a cost of $200 bucks. I called Delta cams in Tacoma Wa and they are grinding and shipping the cam out tomorrow. The cost was $49 for a regrind or $99 for a new core. I chose the more expensive of the two.
I e-mailed Ed and hopefully he will give me the skinny on the converter. I'll post what
I find out.
Happy Johnson 06-30-2004, 09:03:00 PM I found the converter is made ATI not TCI.
10" Treemaster
10" Treemaster MRT
$593.11
$819.50
This info is from a member on team Chevelle not Ed.
jteenstra 07-01-2004, 09:22:00 AM I am very interested to see the progress of this post as I am preparing to build my 454 with the same combo. However, my main concern is my car being a 73 and living in Arizona, it has to pass the emissions test. Do you guys have to as well? Any input from others doing the same?

InitialD 07-01-2004, 05:32:00 PM Happy,
I have a 454 .030 sitting in my hot little hands...er garage. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif I was trying to go as close to exact as I could. I've got some -781 ovals, if I remember right. Not ported or anything, but there is a guy in my local f-body club that is supposed to be pretty good...
Right now I'm slowly getting tranny stuff and manifold and tin. I MAY have it ready next summer....
I don't have ed's recipe right here in front of me, but I thought he used an 8" converter. Maybe that was for his roller version? Was Delta's price for cam only? What lifters do they reccomend?
Criminy, those converters are $$$....
Jteenstra: No emissions here when(if) I ever move I may have to do some thinking then http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Happy Johnson 07-01-2004, 08:54:00 PM I was gong to use a set of 781 heads too but I found some 215's.
Delta's price was for the cam only. I didn't ask for a lifter recommendation so I'm not sure.
The hyd lifter combo says it needs a 10 ATI treemaster converter. I e-mailed Ed and that's what he told me.
Jteenstra this cam is too big for emisssions testing, luckily we don't have emissions testing on 74 and older car here in CA.
jteenstra 03-05-2005, 12:39:00 AM Happy,
Just wondering how you are doing on your BSE engine.
I am looking for a pair of 215 heads and have a couple questions for you.
Have you had to modify your L2399F piston domes to use the 215 heads? Any modification to the 215 heads required?

rich1978 03-05-2005, 01:40:00 AM I run pretty close to the BSE combo. I'm still getting my engine broken in and sorted out, running a '67 Chevelle with 4.88 rear and 30" tall slicks, tonight I ran a 7.61 @ 89 in the 1/8th (1.70 60 foot), shifting WAY low (4200-4500 RPM) and still launching the car somewhat softly. My car probably weighs 3400 pounds. The 7.61 is the first time I've actually run the car the whole way down the track without getting out of it.
My combo:
-454 block, .030 over
-L2399 forged pistons (~10.2 compression)
-GM 215 casing oval port heads 2.19/1.88 valves, bowls cleaned up a little by Jakeshoe
-Delta cam, 236/244 @ .050, .555/.566 lift
-Comp cams Pro Magnum roller rockers
-Offenhauser dual-plane, rect. port dual quad mainfild with 2 Holley 450's
-Mallory distributor and VI-AL ignition.
-old dented up 1 3/4" primary headers
-TH350 transmission, 10" Summit converter (~3200 stall, can foot brake to 2400)
I'm sure there's other ways to build a stout big block, but this combo is STOUT, no two ways about it.
The L2399F pistons, from my understanding, will work with either a closed or open chamber, no grinding necessary. I certianly didn't have any clearance issues.
rscamaro73 03-05-2005, 11:40:00 AM I'm gonna hit this up as well.....but run a different trans http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Has anyone gotten one on a DYNO yet ??
pdq67 03-06-2005, 12:02:00 AM Hey, please say hello to Ed for me the next time anybody contact's him!!

Mike N 03-06-2005, 12:16:00 PM Guys, here's an article about two heavy cars with BB's. One is a 3600 lb 81 Camaro with a 781 headed 468, and the other is a 3500 lb 78 Regal with a 215 headed 427.

jteenstra 03-06-2005, 12:27:00 PM Thanks for the reply rich1978,
I bought a pair of 215's (L 11 7, L 18 7) yesterday and am looking forward to the rebuild. Anybody have pictures of what the chamber looks like when you "unshroud" the valve (intake - exhaust?)?

They may be high, but they work.
I mad the mistake of buying a different brand for a similar combo, and they missed it by 1000 rpm....
PL 73RS 03-06-2005, 11:18:00 PM I am in the process of building a 454 for for my 73. I posted earlier about 2.19 and 1.88 valves and mentioned a friend was helping on my build and had total faith in his combo. Well he is no other that Pat Budd himself. I gotta say the man knows his stuff. We are planning on running 10's on pump gas with my 781 headed car. Follow his plans and you won't go wrong. Oh yea, can't deny his chassis building either. Pro Car in New York. My .02. Thanks Pat.
