View Full Version : Now I think we've got cam problems with the mustang

Well, we got the other problem figured out (carb needed tuned BAD), now we've drove it a couple times. Well when I set the valves a while ago, I had one lifter that I just could not get to stop ticking so I got it as quiet as I could and called it good. Well NOW, when we start it there is a loud clacking or knocking coming from that side of the engine for just a second or two. You can specifically count the number of times it does it and it's only about 3-4 times in this second or two. Just until the oil gets pumped up good.

So what I AM thinking is, that one lifter has gone bad. The cam is an Edelbrock Performer. Only has about 2000 miles on it, properly broken in, and has never been abused. Just regular street driving.
This really pisses me off and if it is this lifter I have a notion to make Edelbrock pay for the gaskets and atleast pay the price for a new set of lifters! If we determine it is the lifter and take this thing apart, that cam is going to come out. I have never really liked the thing because they have all of these stipulations that you cant use aftermarket springs, cant used different ratio rockers than stock, cant change the lifters after the cam is broken in with a set (I guess we are in trouble then), and cant use roller rockers. What kind of crap is that! You can't supe that thing up at all at a later time. What! Is it that freaking soft or what!
RANT OVER

My brother likes the cam and does not want any bigger cam, he would rather just replace the lifters and call it good.
What do you think we should do?
Do you think we can get Edelbrock to pay for the stuff?

it definatley sounds like a lifter issue to me. you might try running some engine flush through the thing make sure it isn't just dirt. if you changed the intake it is a possibility that dirt fell down in the engine, which could have made the lifter worse.
HA good luck with getting Edelbrock to pay for all that. i think the only thing your gona get out of them is a new cam and lifters at best. and i doubt that. if they have that many stipulations then there is gotta be one they wrote in tiny black ink somewhere that they will get ya with.

i say jsut spend the money and get a whole cam kit from comp cams that comes with cam, lifters, springs, spring retainers, timing set, etc...
becasue iono about changing jsut the lifters. there are other people on here that will say it is fine but i know i wouldn't take that risk i have seen it happen too many times when someone only replaces the lifters and breaks a lobe off the cam. and a couple of times it was on fairly new engines with aftermarket race cams! so it's not just something that can happen on an old tired small block.

Anyone have any idea how we should go about trying to get Edelbrock to pay for the new cam and stuff?

if you were to get them to pay you would fisr have to read any and all small print that was given to you when you got all the stuff. and if you read it all and there is nothing that could exclude you then you could proly present the stuff to them. did you buy the stuff online? they might say that you have to buy it from a lisenced Edelbrock dealer. other than that i'd just call them up and tell them everything that happened in great detail.

Try some LUCAS oil additive.

If that help, you'll be a converted person for life. I used that in a car and it was night and day.....
