PL 73RS 02-16-2005, 10:48:00 AM I picked up a 454 this weekend for my 73. I plan on using my flat hood and was hoping some who have done this would let me know what intake they are using. Also, I've seen a few post on this as well as headers, but be damned if I can find them. I would like to use coated headers, who's are you using with an automatic. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Pat
Jack Titone 02-16-2005, 11:45:00 AM Pat - Since you are going to use a flat hood, you need to concentrate on a dual plane manifold for a street application which is not a high rise manifold. A single plane manifold is basically for race applications and are raised and require a cowl hood. You need to look in Jegs or Summit's part book and then call one of the vendors to see what is best for your application.
vegas1974z28 02-16-2005, 11:53:00 AM "I'm running the Dynomax headers for a 70-72 BBC. The fit in nicely from
the
bottom. Just gotta jack the car up some (and use jackstands).
Wayne"
They worked perfect!
wayner 02-16-2005, 12:35:00 PM Also a stock cast iron 4 barrel manifold are shorter ones, like used on the LS5
Summit has their own brand of headers for 2nd generation camaros with BBC's
Part # SUM-G9010 - $79.50 - Camaro, 1970-81 396-454
Hedman also sells ceramic coated for 1970-81 396-502 both shorty or full tube, summit has those too.

PL 73RS 02-16-2005, 01:25:00 PM Guys, thanks for the info. I hope to have this thing done in the next 30 days or so. I really want an aftermarket intake. Thanks again, Pat
WildBillyT 02-16-2005, 01:28:00 PM Torker II is your only aftermarket choice from my experience. There just wasn't enough room for a performer when I did the conversion.

70modelz28 02-16-2005, 01:52:00 PM i had a torquer II on top of a 396 when i got my 70. i still had to have an L88 style hood(at least i think thats what it was). but a flat one wouldnt let me have a breather
rscamaro73 02-16-2005, 05:41:00 PM I have a performer on mine and there's NO way a flat hood would have fit. I had a Holley spreadbore on it and had an inch or 2 clearance....MAX....
So now I have a 4" cowl hood http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
I also have an LS5 intake for sale....
bigbloc 02-16-2005, 07:47:00 PM Like brand new Torker II intake for sale. $75.00 + shipping

gpierce 02-16-2005, 09:15:00 PM Torker II is the ONLY aftermarket manifold that will fit. Get a PAW catalog which has dimensions for all manifolds, none match the factory cast iron or the Torker.
That is, with any sort of contained air filter. I was able to use a high rise dual plane edelbrock, with a 2" air filter on a 2 1/4" drop base and the air filter sealed against the hood http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif Not optimal for shows, but it works http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

PL 73RS 02-18-2005, 08:31:00 AM Bob, I received your e-mail, but I can't return it for some reason. I have some SBC and BBC mounts here. I will measure the cross bolt difference between the BBC and SBC to see what the installed height diff would be. Thanks Pat

pdq67 02-20-2005, 12:14:00 AM Watch out changing rubber mounts b/c a shorter one just may cause the roll of the pan to hit the subframe??
As for a stock dual plane intake, the really low LS-6, 450hp/454, rect. port intake is as low as they come!! It almost suck's up-hill, it's so low!! PN3977609.
It was made for the low hood-line 'Vette's of the time b/c nothing else would fit AND that's when E-brock jumped in and made the Torquer for that application, that's why it is so short!!
The next is the stock, cast-iron Q-Jet intake, PN 3977608 that was used on the 390hp/454 and such. I think it is also used on the 454, lo-po, P/U motors too but don't know for sure??

Jim Mac 02-25-2005, 11:53:00 PM is the torker 2 you guys are talking about the ones from the late 70's single plane, which the carb sits at an angle and turned? I was going to use a performer on my 454, but if it doesn't fit under the flat hood I've got another as discribed above. or a stock truck peanut port intake, that came with the heads. can I use the aftermarket intake? jim
badazz81z28 02-26-2005, 01:46:00 AM Dont waste your time with any cheap intake so you can use a stock hood. Take advantage of having a rat motor. I was in your shoes a while ago and just decided to buy a hood. So I could run the performance goodies.
worth it in the long run
jdove 02-27-2005, 04:57:00 PM Bad, Where did you get your hood? I have a 4554 w/weind dual plane and lots of goodies. I really need a hood 4 inch. Did you get the fiberglass or steel?
Thanks
bigbloc 02-27-2005, 05:24:00 PM Jim, That's the old BB torker which is like the Tarantula intake with the carb caddy-wompass. I do not think it will fit under a stock hood.
