i have a 70 camaro bought 14 years ago was told it was a z28 now am older and wiser ha ha trying to restore but according to some recent research i found z28 didnt come with ac option. mine has ac. was told that there was a company called detroit steel that could tell everything just from vin #. cant locate said company. cowl tag/body tag is partially destroyed i know the easy stuff where made and so on. the number is 124870n582231 any help would be appreciated. if anyone can help or know of a company that can help me figure out what options were on it and the drivetrain and so forth. the car was a mess when i got it gutted and the original manual trans replaced with an auto. i dont know how people can be so cruel.

Might pull the rear seats and look for a build sheet, or sometimes it's on top of the gas tank. This would give the options for the car. No way to get this info otherwise. It is a V8 car but doesn't seem to be a Z.

That is correct, there was not A/C in a Z28 until 1973. Your VIN only tells that the car came equipped with a V-8, as stated above. As far as I know, you can't tell anything else about the car from the VIN number. Starting in 1972 the VIN contained a letter which told exactly what engine came in the car, so the Z28 LT-1 or the SS-396 cars were easy to identify. Being that your car was built at the Norwood plant, there should be a Z28 code on your trim tag on the LH side of the cowl area.

hey thanks guys i know where the build sheet should have been but unfortunately its gone too.i didnt think there was anyway of finding out anything else. a local gear head had said something about that detroit company and i thought maybe someone knew something about it.the closest i could get was detroit iron info systems but thats just manuals and such.well so much for original i guess i'll just go custom more fun anyway.
