View Full Version : Compression Test?

Just a couple questions about doing a compression test on the daily driver(110K 2.0L).

1. Should I do it with engine cold or warm?

2. How many times should I crank it? I tried one cylinder real quick and the more I crank it the higher the compression gauge reads-it only stops climbing after like probably 10 or more turns? Should I just continue starting the engine until the need stops climbing?

3. What kind of variation is acceptable for a 110K 2.0L?

Thanks for the help!

Drive the engine around until it's warmed up and running "clean" then let it cool off enough that you're not burning your fingers screwing the compression gague in the plug holes. You should only need about 4 compression strokes before it "levels out." Remember to block the throttle wide open and disconnect the ignition before performing the test.

Compression readings can vary from engine to engine. Consult a shop manual on what an acceptable range should be. Having 4 equal readings is more important than the raw number.

I was checking it and it definetly still builds pressure up to about the 6-8th time I turn her over...then it levels off. Should I do that many revolutions for all of em?

AllGo, the pressure building up is an artifact of the way the gauge works. If you look at the cranking cylinder pressure versus crank angle with a high speed pressure sensor you will see it is the same profile each cycle.

Just keep cranking it until the gauge reading levels out.
