Anyone know how to lock out the timing on a Mallory HEI distributor? I'm thining about running a msd programmable timing computer and i need my distributor timing locked out if i do. I forsee the word "weld" coming up in a reply somewhere...

Well, there used to be a kit you could buy that would not only lock the advance but it would also phase the rotor to the cap but it seems to be "phased" out of existance. The next best thing would be to weld it. Just toss the module, springs and weights and weld it together. You can still phase it out of the car if you want to.

I locked mine out a couple of years ago. I have the comp 9000 dist. It was one of the easiest things to do. I do not remember exactly what I did, but I will be able to get you close enough you can figure it out! As I am sure you know everything is below the bottom part of the cap. Remove all the springs. There is a screw and I think it is attached to a tab. Take that screw off and look for a place where that tab can be attached. The tab may need to be bent, but I am sure the design of the dist was made to be locked out, and there is a place for it. I have not had to mess with mine at all since so sorry for the vague description, but I am sure once you start you will understand what I am trying to say.

Good luck,

Bob

Bob, that's a prety darn decent explaination of how to lock the comp9000 out. I've done it and followed your explaination just fine. But unfortunately you just confussed the heck out of jetmech,, he's got a Mallory HEI replacement (LOL sorry, not trying to be a smart @$$, it's just comes naturally)

jetmech, the easiest way is to weld, but a cleaner way is to remove the weights, drill and pin the advance. Then it could be converted back to an advance distributor if you were to sell it. I'm really not sure yhy you would drop that much $'s into a timing computer and run a HEI distributor, but I'm assuming there is more to the story (as in boost of some sort)

Are you sure your going to be able to use the large body distributor? Many of the blowers and tunnelrams require a small cap format to clear everything.

BTW, have you looked at the digital Mallory Hyfire VI, it's got a built in programmable boost timing controller. You provide the MAP sensor and program in the start retard value, timing slope / per psi, dual rev limiters, and RPM/window switch... pretty nice 'all in one' box for the $
