View Full Version : Dual Exhaust on my Z28
prats4 01-25-2007, 03:55:11 PM Is it worth it to have a shop install true dual exhaust on my 1980 Z28? Or will I not really notice a performance difference? Added Pics of the finised job!!

craigblock 01-25-2007, 04:12:36 PM If it's a stock 350, get cylinder heads instead. Just my opinion.
prats4 01-25-2007, 04:24:54 PM Yeah the car has camel backs(humps) on it.
steve jones 01-25-2007, 04:30:36 PM I installed the Summit headers and 2 1/4" duals on my 79. It sounds great and it was as cheap as having a shop install pipes. The whole thing cost about $275. after shipping.
skatinjay27 01-25-2007, 04:39:30 PM same here i got the summit headers and universal x-pipe after a weekend and under 250 i had a completley new exhaust but i didnt feel that huge of a difference it was faster and sounded better just not as much gain as i expected
DUSK BLUE 01-25-2007, 10:24:01 PM Go for the totall package, its worth it

I bought the FLOWMASTER KIT. It comes with special 50 series mufflers that are alot thinner so they fit nice and close. The headers are FLOWTECH.
I got the flowmaster kit from Adam at HYPER PERFORMANCE a sponsor on this site, I think the kit ran me $370 del;ivered.
prats4 01-26-2007, 10:09:13 PM Got my exhaust installed they did an awesome job, from the manifolds back with 2.5" pipe and shorties off the mufflers, WOW!! Only charged $200.

80ZED28 EH 01-26-2007, 10:31:18 PM Seems like a good deal! What kind of difference do you notice? Also, what brand mufflers did you go with? Post up some pics if you can.
71 Camaro 01-26-2007, 10:38:17 PM A few years ago I had a stock 76 LT with a 350. Had the local muffler shop do a dual system using turbo muffs that I brought.
No improvement in performance at all. Very puzzling. Then I went out and bought a Mr. Gasket dress up kit that had a nice big chrome breather. THAT made a huge difference. Apparently the stock breather was choking the performance on that car. Lesson learned.
Have Dynomax on my LT1 Roadmaster, very nice. Might try them when ready to do duals on my 71.
prats4 01-26-2007, 10:59:17 PM I will get pics tomorrow!! I have just a stock turbo mufflers on with the exhaust. I noticed I have more mid range power, but almost feels like I lost some bottom end?? We'll have to see when is warms up in North Dakota. Cruising with the Z today, Ice Fishing tommorrow!!

BonzoHansen 01-28-2007, 08:53:59 PM What made you go with downturns/no tailpipes?

that thing looks beautiful
prats4 01-28-2007, 09:37:05 PM I like the look of turn-downs!! Just a preference.

I agree, no tailpipes sucks for many reasons. Not sure you're gonna like it that way. Reminds me of some of the stuff I used to do when I was a teenager. :D

Well it sounds pretty crappy imo, tailpipes add a certain tone. That is why people like different brands of exhaust systems. For the sound. Your way just makes a lot of racket. Sounds pretty much the same even when mufflers have holes or exhaust leaks.
Car can fill with CO while idling. I guess death would be a drawback.
I see you live in snow country, definitely would back up into car if you get stuck idling in the snow somewhere.
When stopped depending on wind direction the exhaust can come right in your window. Not real pleasant.
Loud as hell inside the car.
Again, my opinion, but it sorta screams hack-job.
No nice tips coming out the back.
Not legal.
Won't pass emissions.
If you need to get an exhaust gas reading to tune, it's gonna suck crawling under the car.
I could prob think of more, but a little tired right now. There are a lot of reason for tailpipes, we don't put em on just for the extra weight you know.
Like I said, I doubt if you will like it much. It's your car though, most of this stuff is just opinion. Don't idle that car in the snow though and make sure you have no leaks in the body. If you do you'll likely know soon.
XxWickedz28xX 01-29-2007, 07:35:45 AM So what your saying 71 Camaro is that you dont like turn downs?? LOL
Serioulsy I like the look of the turndowns, looks kinda mean. But I wouldnt put them on my car! I like not smelling hot exhaust, and the noise is a huge factor for me.
prats4 01-29-2007, 07:38:38 AM 71' thanks for the input! WOW...I like the look also I will have to see?

We used to do that in the old days, no money, so we'd hack off the rear of exhaust, usually that's what went bad, pipes, muffs. Then we'd toss on a couple muffs with downturns.
Another think I forgot before is resonance. The whole car will likely vibrate at a certain RPM range. I actually thought it was cool back in the day. LOL Maybe you will too. ;)
