Hey, I just smoked my drill trying to prime the oil pump. It was an old drill, so I'm not too worried about it. My question is, how long should I sit there with the drill going until oil comes out by the rockers? I rotated the crank a few times, but no oil came out. I guess I was on it for about 2 minutes. Thanks for any help
I forgot to mention that this engine was running before. It's just been sittin in my garage for about a year and a half. It's now in the car.

I wouldn't worry too much about it on a used engine. Fire the puppy up and you should be good to go. The oil not coming out the rockers is probably nothing to be concerned about unless you used an old distributor with the cam gear ground off or the correct priming tool. Even then I wouldn't worry too much if it worked in the past.

i had a similar problem and i had the right kind of primming too and everything. i could only get ol to come out of one side of the engine. by the way i smoke my dad's bran new drill that he got for xmas doing mine. it started to smoke so i let it cool off and put it back in the case. rraa haa. it still works but he never knew.
since i couldn't get oil all over before i tried to fire it i just disconnected the distributer and cranked it untill the oil pressure came up to about 40psi. then i hooked everything back up and fired it and it has been fine.

You may never get oil to the rockers. Really, a minute is lots for filling the passages.

If you take your 125 cc cycle engine and mate it to the priming tool it only takes .8 seconds to get oil at the rockers per Tim on Tool Time. Thats not over doing it is it? I see people at the Goodguys with blenders running 80 cc 2 cycle motors for margaritas!!!! If it works for them....

Ditto, and what do you think your really going to accomplish if you do. The goal of priming the motor is to fill the oil passages with oil and have oil ready to feed the rotating assembly at startup. Being the sbc oils from the top down, and only what is pumped up out of the lifters ever sees the top of the pushrods,,, if you see ANYTHING at the top of the pushrods your probably just washing assembly lube away from the main and rod bearings. If you prefilled the oil filter, and you used assembly lube on the upper valve train, and you saw 45+psi of oil pressure for ~10-20 seconds... drop the distributor in,, she's ready to rock!

you did use assembly lube?
now fill the filter and engine with oil
set the distributer where it should be timed,
crank the engine over till the gauge has some pressure. check the timing too.
the oil galleries are filled with oil http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
now add fuel and start the engine.
now if you do this with a "engine primer and drill" when you remove the engine primer and install the dist, the galleries will empty and you'll be back to a dry engine.
