remember theres a line of bolts on the outside of the head, below the exhaust manifold.
Then under the valve cover, there's a bolt between each set of rockers.
And the ones people over look. At the ends, down in a low spot, thats filled with oil most of the times is a bolt
With all bolts out, you may have to stick a screw driver between the block and head, then tap screw driver with a hammer

i should have stated, building engines is a pasttime of mine, so yeah i know there are 17 bolts per head on a SBC. usually i can just undo all the bolts and then slide the end two bolts back in the head and kind of give a twist and they will come out. these ones required standing on the engine stand and sliding a jack handle down the intake port, then once i had the entire weight of the engine off of the stand they would come loose. what a pain!

Take a block of wood and hold it against the end of the head. Take a B.F.H. and knock the piss out of it a couple or 3 times. The head dowels could be rusted. If this doesn't work, try dynamite!
