I've been trying to find a fuel pump now for three weeks that will fit my '80 Z. I ordered an Edelbrock from Summit and it didn't fit. The inlet/outlet ports were right up against the frame. So, I ordered another one from Summit. This time a Holley. This one fit but the inlet was so close to the frame. The hose was on so tight in between the frame and the fitting that it finally busted about an hour later.

Is there a fuel pump (high performance) made, preferably mechanical, that will fit perfectly? How about the Carter? Can I take apart the Holley and reposition the inlet/outlets? Is it easy to do?

Thanks in advance.

are you running enough HP you need an aftermarket pump??

If you get one of those you need the 'bottom feeder' kit. Its a new baseplate that puts the inlet/outlet on the bottom. Then you put in some 90 deg elbows and go from there.

A parts store $12-13 replacement pump for a 1970 or 71 camaro 350 LT1 will do the job great.

3 line pump (supply in and out, and return)

I run that pump on my car and have no probs feeding my 355 with it, even running 118 mph through the traps

Yeah, I just dropped a new 383 stroker motor in it. 440 hp.

DO I need a high performance pump? I kinda wanted the chrome pump to go with the motor. Here's a pic:

I run a Holley 12-834 (80 GPH) mechanical pump on my '80 RS. It fits nicely, no mods. Also Edelbrock part # 1797 (Bottom feed fuel pump plate) made specifically for Edelbrock's 6 valve pumps on vehicles where there's a space problem like 2nd gen Camaros. Around $22 most retailers.

GoldenOne has it covered front to back on this one.

Would that bottom feed kit fit on a Carter 120gph pump?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 80 Z28 use that tall fuel pump that is almost twice the height of the standard pumps? If so, you will have your best results trying to get another tall one like the original if you plan to keep your original fuel lines. I've never seen any aftermarket chrome pumps in that tall design, so good luck finding one.

Thanks for everyones help. Today, I'm going to remove the Holley and take it apart and turn it to reposition the lines. If that doesn't work, I'll go with GoldenOne's idea. Thanks again.

most of the aftermarket pumps I have seen are clockable. If you take the screws out of the bottom you can turn it any direction you want.

An excellent pump for that application might be the Carter 6101M. I got one for $18 bucks CDN about 3 years ago.
