View Full Version : who runs solid cams?
Darknight 01-17-2007, 07:02:12 PM i am already bored with my power and not even 2000 miles yet. have a 268xe.
have great rpm heads, 3.42 rear, 2500 stall.
thought of going solid cam and getting all i can out of the heads.
who runs them in daily drivers, what are the +- of them, noise, maintence, etc.
dustypowers 01-17-2007, 07:08:03 PM nit in my daily driver but the 68 has a silid lift and we do quite a bite of maintinance to it
Mwilson 01-17-2007, 07:18:42 PM I run solid and rarely (never) do maintenance it seems to be fine? I like solid. The comp 280 b8 is a nice street cam, if not something in that line would probrably work well I dont know your combo but Id call comp.
Lowend 01-17-2007, 07:45:02 PM The upkeep of a solid lifter cam, if done right isn't that big of a deal. You can get away with a once/year check.
Are you running Edelbrock RPM heads? what compression? The XE268 is a pretty dinky cam if I remember right (224@050?).
The only real advantages of solid lifter flat-tappet cams are going to appear at higher rpm ranges. What RPM range do you want to operate in?
Darknight 01-17-2007, 08:14:15 PM really mostly street, occasionally 6500+, getting urge to hit track occasionally. I know up to 6000 a good hydralic can work, most high end after 5800 all the time would benefit more from a solid though.
its 10-1, 64cc heads, .038 quench, dish pistons, out of box rpm heads, 1.6 harland sharps, rpm intake, going to try a stealth though with change, a 670 avenger, but getting a 770 to go with change. stall is hughes 2500, bulletproof 350th and 3.42 locker in the rear. will get M/T streets too.
i got the 268xe cause originally had camel heads, should have gone bigger as they could have kept up with more. also didnt want TOO big. but now i want the max i can push on the combo. the springs are good to .525, really need something advertised aroun .510 with the 1.6 difference. dont care if "sounds" mean, i want it mean...
the voodoo lines are good for hydralics, put one in the nova, the 268 competitor and its much better in a worse engine than the comp one. they make an aggressive one thats .508/.515 or so i think. looked at the bracketmasters, the magnums, i ran a 280 before, good cam. i like the split durations though.
HULKZ28 01-17-2007, 09:08:28 PM Knight, I ran a 280 mag in my 355 and it was very comparable to the next cam in the same motor XE274... That one lost a lobe on #6 cyl..Comp gave me a replacement(still in the box with new lifters in my garage).I wanted more power so I got A doug herbert solid... What a difference!!.. I am very happy with that cam... From what I've read , solids only need adj. every 3000 miles.. Prob. more if your rompin on it..
Good luck

1981z28owner 01-17-2007, 11:46:36 PM i ran the 282S on the street. it ran great, i only adjusted it about 3-4 times a year, mainly because i would drag race about twice a month. My father has had the 282 since 1983 and it has worked great also. just make sure u break it in correctly.
camertom 01-18-2007, 12:30:37 AM Run an Isky single pattern Z-27 grind w/ 246 @ .050 and .507 lift x 1.6 rockers for .541 on my 406. First three checks saw 3-4 valves out .002-.003 each time no doubt due to everything settling in on a new engine. Last three checks I did showed absolutely zero change. Once they're set up and watched a few times they're easy to work with and keep in tune. The trick is keep an eye on them early on.
With a new single plane intake, 4150 Holley and 4" cowl I hope to find out just how strong the cam, heads and 10.5 to 1 compression really are this year. The low rise and Q-jet under a stock flat hood was holding it back a bit.
CWT Racin' 01-18-2007, 07:42:49 AM Lunati's Bracket master2 00013 is a good street/strip solid cam, 2500-6500 range, .515 lift, 300/310 dur. 110? lsa cam pulls good to 7000, good mid range punch!
Lowend 01-18-2007, 02:46:38 PM Isky definetley makes the most agressive flat tappet solid cams out there right now. Camertom is close to what I would reccomend, altough I would be looking more towards a dual pattern cam with the RPM heads.
Take at look at Isky 201524 (http://iskycams.com/timingchart.php?product_number=201524) (244/248@050) but order it on a 110 Lobe Seperation with 4 deg of advance. Lift is .559/.570 with 1.6 rockers, but the RPM springs are rated to .570 lift so you should be ok (espically after .018 lash)
Expect the powerband from 2500-7000RPM with peak power ~6800
It'll scream
east_bay 73 01-18-2007, 03:22:21 PM I got my solid from Reed cams, you might want to look him up on google for the #.... The cam he recommended to me was just what i was looking for when all the other cam companies were recommending cams that are too big
Damon 01-18-2007, 03:44:12 PM I have run solid flat tappets many times. I've always found them to be worth noticable power over an equivalently spec'ed hydraulic flat tappet and it doesn't take massive springs to really spin them out to serious RPMs. They're also way cheaper than setting up for a roller (although they won't make as much power as a well chosen roller).
pdq67 01-18-2007, 06:52:02 PM Look into Clay Smith, Crower and Reed and Isky, like said..
Old time cam companies that have some fine cams, imho!!
And for SOTA, ask Harold to spec. you one of his!!

Darknight 01-18-2007, 07:00:39 PM the z27 is one i like, i have three intakes can run, so can test each one, most likely stay with the holley 300-36. high rise and dual plane. also have a strip dominator, and rpm, plus getting a steath from someone. I would like to get in the 12's with decent tires, so need the cam to work hard with the heads.
Darknight 01-18-2007, 07:01:58 PM edit that...hope to be in the 11's. should be high 12 now.
1980RS 01-20-2007, 12:50:00 AM My 454 in a '68 firebird has a 282s comp cams solid runs great goes like hell and runs 11.90's @ 113mph at the track you just have to get used to the valvetrain noise.
