How feasible is DIY A/C work? Assuming 134A retrofit.

Last night I recharged the A/C on my 96 TA and today will run out for some guages and a UV dye kit and see what's up with it. But in general do many of you do your own AC work?

How about vacuuming down the system and flushing the system. Can you recommend a vacuum pump or something I can put on my air compressor?

I'm in FL and would like to find a 2nd gen with air if possible...it's really helpful down here but AC work is $$$

That's good idea. I've heard of that before. I found one on JC Whitney for $70 that hooks up to my air compressor. I also found a "real" vacuum pump that does 3 cfm for $180 online. Not bad.

I just purchased and watched Autozones DIY AC DVD and it's awesome. Highly recommended to newbies.

I just re-installed the A/C in my '81. It was a dealer installed A/C, not factor. It has an evaporator unit that is made for the Camaro and the rest is just a univeral kit. I put it all back together using hose barb connections and new barrier hose. I converted it to R-134 and I picked up a cheap vacuum pump from Harbor Freight that did not do a very good job with my compressor. My neighbor is an A/C service guy so he hooked up his vacuum pump and it did great. So far the unit is working pretty good in these 100* Texas days...

I've heard good things about the JC Whitney models...pulled 30 in vacuum in one guys hands. Runs your compressor a lot though.
