alright i found out that my engine has a hard time starting ,jumps out of time, kicks back, and get in a bind when starting ,so when found the problem when i pulled my dist, out and the cam chewed off some of the drive gear.
so far i drian the oil and the magnets picked up some shavings, the cams gear looked good no wear on it.

im worried about putting back together because im afraid of the same thing happening.

now
i had some advice that i cant' run stock dirve gear, since im running a hyd.roller cam that i would have to run a brass one.

however im still not sure what to do ,im new to this situation

The cam gear material determines the required distributor gear material, and the cam manufacturer will be able to tell you that information.
You need to turn the engine over at least twice while examining the cam gear, oftentimes it will only wear on half the gear. (only 180° of the total gear)

The story you are hearing was correct in early 80's and earlier.
Now the rest of the story,
It depends on the Cam.
Is it a 100% billet cam with a billet gear? That is what needs a brass gear.
VERY Few Hyd Roller cams are billet.
Most are Cast and have a pressed on Iron gear.
Billet cams can also receive a pressed on iron gear.
Ask your Cam maker.
