I installed an electric fan because it cost less than buying the right clutch/fan assembly and new shroud, all my car had when I bought it was a fixed steel fan w/ no shroud. The most noticable difference will be that the engine will want to rev quicker because of the decrease in drag esp. if you had a flex or fixed blade fan before. The electric fan still robs HP but only when it is on, my idle drops about 100 rpm when it kicks on and the volt guage goes down about .5 volts so there is still a draw, just not all the time.

The eye apeal is also another plus, the engine compartment looks a lot better and more cleaner w/ an electric fan.

I have on my 79 chevy motor home w/ a 400. When above 35MPH I dont even need it at 75 degres out side. At 90 in WYO All I could do was 55mph with dual 12 inch set up. In my 55 chevy pu (very light) barely had a fan on it. Modify it too much youll will have problems with it, but thats half the fun..

Elec. fans are well worth the money and time. Most aftermarket elec fans wont cut it, I like the stock OEM ones best.

Your car will run cooler and you'll drop your ET .1-.25 sec

I had several different aftermarket fans on my Chevelle. None of them could keep the engine from overheating. I went with a flex fan, and never looked back.

Electric fans is a worthwhile upgrade, they can be controlled and they only run when they need too, freeing up power. Some of the GOOD OEM fans are:

Taurus 2 speed
4th generation F body LS1 and LT1
Lincoln Mark VIII
Windstar dual (maynot fit 2nd generation camaro)

There are some good aftermarket fans

i installed a dual electric fan unti from a '99 malibu in mine, with a 3 core radiator.. cools very good, a lot better than the old setup.

i still have to wire it up properly though, currently i just got an inline fuse and on aff switch.. need more time.

i say go for, you can get good deals on ebay and probably better ones at a local scrap yard..

I switched over from my old clutch fan to duel electrics from a 4th gen. I never have cooling problems and they clean up appearance of the engine bay. They also eliminated the "whoosh" sound made when revving the motor with the old clutch fan, sounds much better. If you have the money to spare, they are a worth while upgrade.

i have the same deal as joecool. no shroud. i was hoping an electric would "clean up" the front of the motor, like on a impala SS. i do worry about the draw on the alt. or if the thing ever crapped out and left me hot on the side of the road.

and the relays with it.

I need to know if any of you guys have any expiriance in hooking it all up into
older velhicles like this 79 i'm building.

Anybody who wants to know the best way to set your car up for any type of aftermarket HO electric fan, email me and I'll explain-it's very easy to control OEM fans to only come on when needed and to speed up via engine temp. increases- Best of both worlds! gmachinz@juno.com
