just wondering if there is any way to make a 406 bigger other than boring the piston bore anymore?..Ive heard of using a 4.00" crank and getting 27 (433 cid) more inches that way..does that sound about right?..or am i talking about somthing else?

You can install a 4" crank into a 400 block and get 427 cubes. You will also be doing a lot of grinding and praying.

Well i wouldt be doing it..I would have my race shop do it..Is this not a very common 400 set-up?

It's becoming a lot more common with the advent of aftermarket 4.125" bore blocks with spread pan rails and raised cams. If you use an old 400 block you will have some serious fitment issues. You can only rotate so much crank in the block.

Yea I have heard of people going to a 4" stroke but I have heard it strongly not reccomended.
Though people have done it because people here have talked about it

The longest stroke I would put into a factory 400 block would be a 3.875" that would get you around 415cid.
VERY torquey motor, but not a good revver

There's another stop before 427/434, it's 415/420ci depending on the bore, 3.875 crank. I don't know how plentiful (cheap??) they are but you might be able to squeeze that into a stock block?!

415 is probably your largest budget engine. After that it gets expensive!

What a crank would i need for the 415/420..
*I have a 0.30 over bore.

Can you stuff a 3.875 crank into a stock 400 block??

Yes, but the block will probably need to be clearanced.
You will need to get the appropriate rods and pistons as well (of course).
The wise man would stud the mains

You would need .060 overbore and an offset stock crank.

i ran a 3.8 stroke in mine and it worked good enough to get it into the 9's with 150 shot, as for not revving, i shifted at 7800, and it got their pretty quick

3.875 stroke will fit into a stock 509 casting 400 block with less clearancing than you would think, using Eagle H beams.

I wouldn't be too afraid to try a 4.00 stroke with a stroker designed rod. The 3.875 wasn't that bad...

4.00 stroke would only get the rods .0625" closer to the block.

Obviously a small base circle cam would be a necessity.

As for a 3.875 stroke not being a revver...

I guess you really couldn't rev a BBC with a 4.250 stroke right?

Hmmm in that case a 415/420 might be my next engine. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
