I've got a 454 block thats missing the main caps it's bored 60 over cylinders look clean I also have the stock 60 over pistons that go in the block what would be a asking price for this or is it just a boat anchor? I do have it posted in the swap board Just wondering whats a decent price should someone ask? Jim

minimal like under 50 bucks? I was going to try to trade it for ps brackets. Or is that stretching it? Jim

As an owner of a machine shop, it has zero value since the process of finding and fitting the correct main caps is a relatively costly process, (labour) we would save it for someone looking to build a big bore 4 bolt engine so we could recoupe the cost of the block. (assuming it will take the overbore)
By the time you add up hot tanking, sonic testing, magnafluxing, and the main cap situation, you can see how little value that block has. On the other hand, you aren't asking for much (brackets) and someone nearby may be very well looking for a project block.
Best of luck to you in finding someone to trade. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

its worth nothing.. give it to me.. i'll even be nice and let YOU pay for shipping... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif lol

its probebly worth atleast $100-300 depending.. around here a CORE engine is going for $1000 easy.. so it depends on where you are put it on ebay you might get more than you think....

i dont see the big deal on the caps missing... a set of aftermarket caps and you normally align hone it anyways and its good to go.. atleast i would think.. since they do it all the time with SBCs

I called chevrolet and they sell new unfinished 4 bolt caps at $167 for a set 1-4 regular caps and #5 oil cap. I just have no use for the block. I just picked up a 2 bolt 454 short block that blew a head gasket for 75 bucks and a 396 short block I traded a .22 marlin rifle. Jim

Jim,

Here's what I would do.

I'd figure out the going rate for a std bore 454 4 bolt (that needs an overbore) and I'd subtract from it the price of the main caps, the price of the necessary align boring etc, and the price difference between an off the shelf .030 over piston and a .100 over piston.

Whatever is left is what I'd ask. Basically make an adjustment for the extra work and parts cost involved in using the block.

You know the minute I throw that thing in trash somebody is going to be needing it. my last 2 350 short blocks took awhile to find new homes for. the 4 bolt got donated to my neighbor, after he found a cracked deck on his motor and the other got donated to the local high school for their race car.Maybe I'll donate this one too. Just get a 366 block and steal the caps from that. THey practically give those blocks away.

Other than the overbore and needing to be align bored for the new caps...

Okay how about I buy a boat and use it as a anchor?
